.270 or 30.06?

I've hunted and shot big game with each. It seems natural to pick 30-06, if a choice was required, considering what so many say about it being more versatile. However, if one used the 270 with only 150 grain Nosler partition, no further versatility is required. There may be other equally as good bullets as Nosler, but it is Nosler that I am familiar with.
Loaded to at least 2900 fps, it is the only load one would require for anything from deer up to the largest animals in Canada. If one were shooting longer ranges in the windy mountains, that load would be better than any the 30-06 could produce.

Dang!! How can I argue with you if you are going to make complete sense?? Right on the money there, brother. If I had it to do over, I'd get a .270. But I am now committed to 30 cals now (except for the wife's .243). And, no, I can't (won't) change that.

You read my mind.

The 30-06 is my all time favorite round, but it's hard to argue with the .270win firing a 150gr partition @ 2900 fps.

I get there with 55 gr of, coincidentally, H4831 out of my 22 inch barrels.

A sectional density of .279 for the 150 gr .270, vs .271 S.D. for the 180 gr .30, plus an additional 200 or so fps, what's not to like.

If you are in BC,and you might hunt for Bison in the future. The 30-06 you can load up to 200gr,because the Reg require the bullet weigh at least 180gr.

I found what I consider to be a guaranteed solution to the dilemma. I have one of each:D.

I'd stick a 140gr TTSX in a.270 and 150gr TTSX in a 30-06 and laugh like hell at anyone that told me that either won't kill as good as a 30-06 with a "standard moose load" of 180gr soft point in a 30-06 or 300WM.

These days, there is no difference if you use good bullets.

270 will do the job with less stress to your shoulder but 30-06 will do it better plus the ammo is everywhere

To Gatehouse,

I hounted Deer in Norway 3 years ago, I had my Remington BDL in 270 with me ammo was hard to get but 30-06 was there.
Poland wild bore 2000 270 it took me 5 days to get it, 30-06 they even had it at the realy local hunting store. Local I mean store that only sale 12 guage and 22s.
I went hunting to prince george BC, wanted to pick up a box of 270 E&I Sports was closed so I went to canadian Tire 30-06 everywhere 270 no ammo comming in a week

Ignore the cartridge question altogether. Within reasonable limits it doesn't matter; a 6.5X55 kills well and so does a .375 and if you choose something in between it will too. Your ammunition supply should be addressed prior to leaving home. What does matter is that you choose a rifle that will provide you with functional reliability, good field accuracy, a decent trigger, sights you can see, in a package that is quick and natural to bring into action. If you are lucky enough to choose a rifle that catches your imagination and provides you with a pride of ownership, so much the better.

As usual words of wisdom from H4831...

I've never seen a store that only sold 30-06 and not .270. .270 is the second most popular cartridge out there, no shortage of ammo for it.

Isn't there some kind of punishment for starting .270/.30-06 threads....like perhaps surrendering Hortons gift certificates to every board member?

They're almost as bad as bear defense threads...for which the punishment should be getting slathered with molasses and being left tied to a Poplar on the edge of a cut block for the first two weeks of April.

It just so happens that I am in the progress of switching to the 6.5 Swede cal, heck they drop moose countless times with over in Norway/Finland and such. It would surely do equally as well in what Canada has to offer.

Having belched all that, I used both and what currently sits in my safe is a
.270, Handloaded with IMR4831 and 130-150gr bullets there's not too much it won't have trouble dropping that a 30-06 would either..
Teddy Roosevelt & Jack O'Connor proved these calibers many times over on all sizes of game. I think for you its a matter of personal preference, what the majority of game you plan on hunting along with distance.
My .02 cents
