My local gun shop is selling Russian Refurbished SKS rifles for $219. With a Box for 1000 rounds of ammo for an additional $179.

My initial thought was gr8 deal!
I went in and checked out the rifles, they are not all in the same shape, some have non matching serial #'s, some have some rust, and some look pretty dang good.
So i picked out the one I like the most and had them set it aside for me to pick up in a few days.

So I was thinking, I know Marstar is selling Chinese NEW SKS rifles for a lil less, with shipping it should be about the same.

Would you guys suggest to go for the "new" Chinese SKS rifle or the Russian Referb. I would like the Russian one more, as I like the Bayonet way more on the Russian Vs the Chinese Spike.
But my main concern is how much of a life time can I expect out of a Referb? Will it be dangerous to use? I checked it out and it looked fine, but I cant be 100% confident about the shape of the barrel, how many rounds can it still take?

Pls give me ur suggestions. I would like to get the Russian one but the "Refeb" kind of scares me.

Cheers and Thank you

It's all about preference man. A Russian refurb is just as good as a Chinese new one.
Me personally, I like Russian SKS's.
But really it's up to you.
There should be no problem with a Russian refurb. Just as long as you maintain it like any rifle it will last you a good while.

Thank you Sir!
I was thought so. I was just a lil concerned about the wear and tear.
However a few of them seemed to be in pretty good shape. Ill make sure to inspect the barrel much closer when i pick it up.

Any sugestions about things I should look for wear and tear wise. I know that some of the firing pins have a history of getting stuck, so i have been inspecting those make sure they are lose and in good shape. Anything else?

alright that's two out of two, and my everyone i talked to agrees with this. i thought someone would steer me towards the NEW Chinese SKS but i guess not a lot of fans lol.

im leaving for the store now.....dont try to stop me now.

thanks for the input guys.
cheers!

What's the problem, they are not collector rifles, just buy it and shoot it. If you can hit the 100m target with it , you're good! They are cheap rifles made for military service not highly valued safe queens as some on these boards go on about. Buy it and have fun, that's what it's all about.

No worries about a Russian referb! Personnally i prefer russian too:) The chinese that Marstar offer are great too, with milled receiver but you are perfect with your russian. Just clean it well and he will outlast you! If you intend to wear out your russian, i wish you good luck my friend, you will have to shoot a freaking lot of ammo:D
Cheers, Jocelyn

I have a Chinese and a Russian SKS and their shooting ability is about the same, with the Chinese a little more accurate.I love the fit and finish better on the Russian one.If it was my choice , I would go for the Russian SKS..Even with mismatched Serials and a few flecks of rust, it is a nice peice of history that is a hoot to shoot.:ar15:

My chinese sks will shoot 4-5" groupings @ 100yards,sniping it is not...but then it was never meant for that! The chinese from marstar aren't stamped but rather milled receivers. Chinese military over stock{surplus from the 1960's} brand new never used!
The milsurp ammo out there is VERY corrosive,it's cheap but you have to ensure that after shooting ALL the metal is cleaned and oiled or it will rust within the week{ I cleaned everything but mearly wiped the mag inside with an oiled rag. a week later RUST!} I think you should also consider a chromed bore when shooting this ammo or I fear this rifle won't out last you. I also like the bladed bayo though...just looks more like serious business than the spike...but then again...rifles are for shooting, not stabbing or playing baseball with. Go with the chrome bore...shoot it and then clean it like some bipolar neat freak.
