FTR newbie question

Would the Savage 10FP .223 be a decent start to get things rolling in factory class ? Looking at having a rifle built as well as , just wanted any input on the Savage above , yeh or neh or other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Prefer to stick to the .223 cal at this time :stfun00b: :p
 
The Savage 10FP would put you in the FTR class here in BC I believe and not the sporter class.

The 10FP in .223 would be a great starter rifle to get lots of cheap trigger time.
 
The gun would work in BC in the sporter class IF it weighs under 12 pounds with all attachments.

If not, you would be into the FTR class. The reason for this is that the Sporter class was designed for those with sporter rifles. the 10FP is a heavy-barreled law enforcement rifle, that is designed for supported shooting. With a tuned load, it should be completely competitive in FTR.

We had to draw a line somewhere to exclude a whole litany of semi-custom "factory" rifles, such as the AI, PGW, and TRG rifles. Guys that spend that much money on a gun and accessories are well positioned to shoot and do well within the FTR class. Someone with an SPS hunting rifle or a Stevens 200 is likely at that point for a good reason, and this gives them the chance to try it without the need to spend extra money on specialized equipment.

Does that make sense? i know we won't please all the people, but by all means come out and give this shooting a try before you pass too much judgement on it! We can even let you try a custom gun for the experience of it.

Should fit into sporter no problem. I thought the 10FP was a heavy gun to begin with like the 10FCP.
 
FTR questions

Thanx guys appreciate the feedback, as mentioned I'm leaning in the direction of building a .223 at this point with the understanding also that the skies the limit in what a guy can put together.

I'd like to be somewhat budget minded leaving room for improvement down the road !!! So, being new to the sport as most of you were at one time, the repeated million dollar question is what would your entry level build consist of ? Not your dream rifle cause I cant afford that :p , but something decent to get a newbie to the line, and by all means if you have something getting dusty in the corner of your safe.

IF you are building a 223 there is no better shooter to talk with about build ideas then Manitou210. He currently shoots this calibre and he knows how to steer it.
 
If you want to get started, the Remington 5R in 223 or the Savage FTR rifle in 223 are both great starting points. I like the remongton because it is the basis for most customized guns. the actions are slick and every possible accessory under the sun exists. They shoot very accurately by all accounts.

The Savage FTR was designed from the ground-up to do exactly what you want. It is an FTR single-shot rifle and is accurate. Barrels are as easy to obtain for these as any other rifle, and you can start here and simply add a custom barrel later-on if you wanted to upgrade, but I'm inclined to believe this won't be necessary at all.

There is a point of diminishing return in japing up a cheap gun like an SPS or Stevens 200. yes, they have a resonable action to start with, but it is only a repeater action. You need a better stock and you need a barrel to be properly installed and the stock bedded.

You'll end up with a good-shooting rifle, but you will have spent more and it will be worth MUCH less. Savage made it possible to get into the game and be ABSOLUTELY competitive with a purpose-built single shot rifle. Team Savage in the US uses these and i have shot with all of them. These guns work.
