Pros & Cons of a Ported Barrel

LOL WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT? I use to guide...... I shoot ported all the time as do all my friends.... it is not that much louder..... 12 gauge is already wicked loud....the porting IS NOT THAT LOUD!

What!? I can't hear you. I just had the client with the ported barrel. I can't hear what you're saying....

Guess where I learned the term from? Other guides who stuck the new guy with the clients with ported rifles... It's kinda funny thinking about it now, but my ears rang for a while.

But what do I know. I just make things up as I go along anyway.

One of my buddy is a waterfowl guide, and no ported barrel allowed on his hunts. It's not that it's makes the gun louder, it makes it louder to the people BESIDE you as the blast is directed sideways. It's akin to sitting right next to an unported muzzle everytime someone takes a shot.

This is the key for me. I don't use hearing protection in the field because the trees and shrubs and wide open spaces absorb and dissipate the noise to the point that it isn't very loud. Being ahead of the muzzle when someone else shoots (presumably safely off to the side) is another matter.

To me, ported barrels increase the sound level to the same as being down range.

In a trap competition, despite wearing hearing protection, I have even less use for them. I would never buy a gun with ported barrels and I take an instant dislike to anyone who shows up to shoot with one.

Thankfully, you almost never see them in International Trap because there's stringent rules as to how far from the end of the barrel the ports have to be and how the porting has to be done. That weeds out 98% of the yahoos right there.

I've done the ported barrel comparison between identical guns. There wasn't enough difference to make it worth the extra noise and the ensuing pain in the ass when the ports need to be cleaned.

I owned a couple of ported guns but sold them long ago.

My Mossberg 930 is ported on top. I don't notice that it is significantly louder, but I also wear ear plugs when I hunt. I do find that my 20 gauge 11-87 Youth gun with 21" barrel is louder than all my 12 gauge guns, even just using 7/8 oz. target loads. The kids WILL be wearing earplugs when shooting it.

I have no idea who told you that but whoever did had no idea what they were talking about.

LOL Yup, the Browning company, the Duck commander, Remington, and pretty much every shotgun company has no idea what they are talking about....oh yea all those shell companies that sell 3.5" shells dont have a clue either. lol

Think about it for a second there champ. Without porting where does the excess gas go? hmm right through your shot pattern.

i hunted with someone yesterday who had a ported mossberg 500.... my right ear still kinda hurts... i thought he blew my eardrum

I would not buy one with a ported barrel now....

and i dont ever fire enough shots to warrant earplugs when hunting

It goes out the barrel just like it does with any gauge. Why is the 3.5" special? If this hair brained theory had any foundation it would apply equally to any gauge not just the 3.5 inch.

If the companies you mentioned state this as fact would you provide a link where they say it? While you are at it you might explain why none of the companies you mentioned offers a 3.5" gun with ported barrel.

'Excess gas'? Shotcups don't get 'blown' like the old felt wads used to, different game.

Myself, I wouldn't pay extra for it, don't feel the need for it, can't tell the difference one way or the other, but the gun came with it.
