well im new to the precision rifle world, grew up a hunter n got into going to the range with some guys from work, and now i want to start on my own precision rifle, and who better to ask my (proably stupid) questions to but the CGN Precision guys, i have been looking at a lot of diffrent rifles and calibers and for some reason im drawn to the 7mm-08, what are the pros and cons of this? would this be a good choice?

awesome caliber in my eyes i have been wondering why the hell we dont hear or read more about it... BC for the 7mm look great i couldnt see barrel life being to much worst then a 308 but maybe it just isnt different enough to be cool. i know a lot of high power silhouette shooters that swear by it

It is my do everything rifle. paper/varmint/big game. Highly accurate , very versatile, cost effective. Very underrated caliber.
Been told it's to small for this, or no good for that. But when I say lets shoot for $50.00 bills at 100 to 500 yards first miss losses the money, the guys seems not so interested.
But seriously I have been shooting this caliber since I was 19 , now 36, have owned many different chamberings but this is the ONE I always rely on.

It is an exceptionally accurate cartridge, but has a couple of drawbacks for "Precision" and by precision, I guess I am referring to long range precision.
The precision game is all about using bullets with the highest possible ballistic coefficients. The 7mm 180 Berger is king of the hill... it is a suPERB bullet, but the 7-08 simply lacks the horsepower to make this bullet go fast, so you are in the position of settling for lesser BC bullets, and since BC is the name of the long range precision game, it is not a great choice.
If you take that same case an neck it down another millimeter and a bit, you have the outstanding 260 Remington. This is a 7-08 (or a 308) with a 6.5mm bullet, and it really rocks. The 140 Berger is not far behind the 7mm 180 for BC and this cartridge easily gets it above 2800 fps, and that is a real sweet spot.
Less recoil, equal or better accuracy and better bullet selection trumps the 7-08 in my mind, but there are many that really love the 7-08.

The Matrix bullets are really good, but Marshall has said he calculates the BC off the drawings, not off the performance. berger used to do this and they adjusted their BC's down when Brian Litz did quantitiative testing and found that the BC's were less than advertised.

why cant you shoot a 180 out of a 7mm08??they are shooting a 210 out of a 308 in fclass and winning??

I think I'd try the 162 amax if trying to get the most out of a 7mm-08. R15, 4350, R17 should all produce pretty decent velocity, and that bullet is damn good balistically. The 180 berger is better, but only marginally until you start looking longer ranges. R15 and 120 TSX works very well for filling the freezer...
identical for me, except for the price, I had to buy new at WSS, might have been a slight on sale discount on it, at the time. Love the gun!
