Question, use counterlever mount as iron sight?

Hey every I have a question, I own a Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel that has a counter lever scope mount attached. No way of removing it as its apart of the barrel. Now here is my problem,

The rail itself has a groove going down the centre of the lever would I be able to use this to line up my shot? Or would I still need a bead at the end of my barrel to line things up? Problem is the lever mount sits higher and finding a bead that high may be an issue! The lever itselt is 6 inches or more long. I had trouble sighting in my scope and not goning to risk wounding a deer during the week long hunt. So im wondering if I can just use the 'iron sights' on the counter lever? :\

My friends who also hunt say the just to use the rail as they have never used a scope on a shotgun. but with it being higher to aim more higher up then normal as the barrel is 3/4 of an under below the counter lever?

Using a cantilever as an aiming device I'm afraid that your shots will be all over the paper provided those manage to land effectively on paper even at close range i.e. 50 yds.

Out of curiosity, what wasn't working with the scope installed?

Is that so? That sucks guess my controlled hunt is over.

My bore sighter must be a POS (Its from redhead) I bore sighted it and it woudnt hit 25-50 yard papers. even the range officer at Silverdale said it must be the bore sighter. So I used what slugs i had to get to hit paper and 2-5 inches from bullseye before i ran out and couldnt shoot anymore. No time to get back to the range. And not wanting to risk hurting a deer.. :\

Only if the rail is exactly parallel with the barrel. Your sight radius on the rail would be pretty short, with poor accuracy as a result. Even if it was zeroed. Which it isn't.

Sorry to hear about your predicament. I can see the frustration.

Could've been due to various other reasons. I've used a basic $30 laser boresighter (Bushnell) to sight in MLs and a 20ga Slug Gun without trouble.

Slug guns are quite finicky when it comes to the particular brand(s) of sabot(s) being shot through that. Hard to say that the scope wasn't properly dialed in if four/five different brands of shells weren't tested. Needless to mention, it would also be prudent though to revalidate the scope installation (and boresight again) prior to using up the ammo....sabots are so expensive.

Perhaps another point to consider as I've never shot a pump gun from a bench.....wondering how that might affect accuracy when/if shot with the "loose" fore end resting on a sand bag......12ga slug recoil is substantial.
