Pistols Legal in Canada???

All I asked is if there was such a list. I did not ask anyone to create a list for me. I simply wanted to know if there was a list similar to that of the list of legal guns for sale in California. A simple response saying no such list exists would have been perfectly acceptable. Instead I get talked to like Im am a total idiot. I have no time for people with that type of attitude. Forums are only as good as the people on them and this one is a complete waste of my time.

My bad. You did get some useful info.

But seriously your question was like asking "is there a list if cars available in Canada"

The good news is. There's more pistol makes and models out there than a new firearm hobbyist needs to choose from.

And as far as the "home defense" goes. That was the newbie comment I was ribbing you in good nature about.

This is Canada after all and we all use pepsi and poutine to protect our homes... Not Guns

Think of the children lad.

This website is like a shady chinese buffet.

Some of it tastes great and will have you coming back for more, some of it is dirt ass roadkill that stinks like shxt and tastes like shxt. After tasting the crap a few times you will learn what to avoid. But you will also learn what you like.

There are some serious kooks here, there are some serious aholes here, there are some good people here, there is some good information and services offered here.

Its the same like life, only condenced and somewhat overly biased at times. You are on an internet gun forum after all, not a spiritual yoga forum.

Back to the question. Figure out what you want in a handgun first. Polymer or steel? Do you want chrome, nickel or tactical OD/Coyote brown as colour options? Do you want to do IPSC or IDPA with it? What calibers are you comfortable with? SA/DA or striker fired? Do you have a bias toward Chinese, American or Europoean guns? Do you want something with history, or something new with all the tacticool bells and whistles?
What aftermarket do you want it to have?

You don't have to narrow it down completely, but answering a few of those questions will narrow your choices. For example, if you want an SA/DA gun with a hammer instead of a striker fired gun in 9mm you eliminate alot of guns like glocks, XD, SR9 etc etc etc. Lets say you also didn't want a fullsize, but a mid or compact. You're choices narrowed even further. Right now, I can think of SIG229 or Norc Sig228copy or CZp07 that hit those choices of a DA/SA hammer fired handgun that isn't fullsize. And there you have it, figure out what you are looking for, and then its much easier to tell you whats available.

Note response number 1...that is exactly what you got.

At any rate with a membership in the tens of thousands, I doubt anyone will care (or even notice) if you don't come back.

Hey 86 I just got my licence and my first gun and haven't been on this site for long but for the time I have been on it it has been a ride up and down. As far as your first handgun you have to balance the caliber with your budget combined with your objectives, to start out hitting targets .22LR is good a bit of recoil and cheap. If you want to impress with size then .500 S&W lots of recoil and expensive. The only real limitation between the two is barrel length. The barrel has to be over four and one eight inches long so you can buy a .500 S&W with a barrel longer than 4.125 inches but not a .22 with a barrel less than 4.125 inches....go figure...:D

The list, as everyone has so politely pointed out to you, would be too long. If you like combat pistols, like what police carry search for a thread "police carry guns" or something like that. This thread has a list of what every police force in Canada is carrying. Some guns to start looking at are;

Glock's
Sig Sauer P226
Smith and Wesson M&P
Springfield XD
1911
CZ Shadow

These are some of the most popular semi auto-matic handguns out there which you can purchase in Canada. I really like the sig p226 and the glock 19. Also take a look at some youtube users. Nutnfancy, has a TON of video reviews on different guns. Another good channel is the Armory Channel, good gun reviews there too.

Goodluck dude, guns are fun! Happy researching and be safe

86, there is such a Prohibited List but you'll find it's mostly rifles on it. These are the Order in Council prohibited items. Neat things like UZI and Thompson, AK etc etc etc are on it. Not many actual handguns. Like another member stated, unless its .25 or .32 or less than 106mm barrel, most handguns will be available on the market for you - that being said for your first, I'd stick to one of the more common ones.

Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

Simple, your list is every pistol ever made is available in Canada. But since you don't have prohib status you can't own anything that is prohibited by name, or has a barrel less than 105mm, or 25 or 32 calibre.

Some of them won't be easy to find, or cheap, but (usually) available. You can even buy a restricted HK MP7 ....... for $15k+

You should learn be MUCH more specific, because the "list" also includes black powder pistols, revolvers and flintlocks and antique handguns of all descriptions. You asked a general question, and got the appropriate answers. You could have asked for a list of what colours of paint is available in Canada....... and gotten the same answers.

As noted previously, the law only says what you CAN'T own, everything else is legal.

Your question was all encompassing and impractical, and that is why you got some of the answers that you did.

It was pretty much as if you asked for the list of all the cars that you could legally buy and own in Canada.

Once you take your restricted course, your question will be answered.

For now, you might want to go to your closest gun store and try few pistols on for size and see what feels comfortable.

However, they might not let you handle firearms in their store without your restricted PAL, but it does not hurt to ask.

At most ranges, other members will be more than happy to let you take a look/ fire a few rounds with their gun.

Good luck!

As the the conversion kit, alot of people swear by them, and I have no doubt that they can be extremly usefull for practice. But if I bring a buddy out to the range, I want to have a veriety of different guns and calibers. I would rather pay for 2 different guns then pay the same amount that can shoot 2 different calibers. Although that might change once I get my cz-75 sp01 shadow :p

I actually thought of a partial answer. The FRT (Firearms Reference Tables) which lists all makes and models of firearms registered in Canada.

There are over 130,000 entries for all firearms, so say if 1/5 of those are handguns, that would put the number around 25,000.

Only verifiers/police/RCMP/CFC have access to the FRT tables.

it would be cool to have a list of handguns available to Canadians. don't you guys think so? I doubt that there are that many handguns available to us as some claim. Hotforguns must investigate!

I think you should pick within the more popular offerings other than M+P:
Glock
Sig
Cz
Norinco
Beretta
Ruger

Why?
Parts availalibility being the first concern (Except maybe the Norinco, but many pistols from Norinco have interchangeable parts with the vanilla flavours).
Second, being the large knowledge base on CGN and elsewhere.
Accessories being a third concern.
The M+P ain't bad either. A good argument could be made that if your friends have it, you should get it too for the very local support.

Good points made here :) parts are really important when choosing a handgun. But, it really depends what you're going to use it for. If it's just for the looks and rarity of the gun, then go nuts! it's fun to collect them. If it's for competing, then you may want to choose a gun in this list above, many more accessories and availability of extra mags.

as long as its the legal lenght, and not .25 or .32 caliber, its legal. and if its not legal, chances are a good gunsmith can make it legal if you want to throw money at it.

By some of the comments posted on here in response to a very simple Question asked by 86 are brutal all he asked was "Did anyone no of such a list" he wasn't asking for someone to provide him with every gun available. Then he gets sliced and diced by some stupid responses. Isn't this forum to help others in need of some intelligent responses to questions one might have.

Make the most of your research by carefully defining your "needs and wants". The budget is also critical. To some, a gun is a tool and so it obviously has to match the job. Purchasing mistakes are expensive. Do you want to compete? I shoot IPSC and so understanding the equipment rules for the various divisions in that sport was one of my starting points. Look at ammo costs if you are going to shoot a lot as we do in IPSC. It's easy to get swayed by commercial hype. Thousands use cost effective polymer framed guns like the Glock. I don't but that has more to do with preferences as that kind of pistol works very well if it is matched to the job. Another key criterion is how the gun fits your hand and that can only be decided by trying the gun on for size. If possible shoot as many guns as you can before settling on the one that suits you best. If you were to come to my club, the members are happy to let new shooters try their guns and will explain the functions before you try it. Their are some very critical choices to make before you decide on brand including the type of action you want or need.
