SKS long range shooting ?

I have been wondering, whats the longest distance shots that people were taking with there SKS rifles? and with what type of optics, red dot, or open sights?

I used to have a 1950 Russian refurb, and with open sights, resting on something, 150 yards would be about the max distance that I would take a shot on a Whitetail Deer, and know that it would be a ethical shot.

I have heard of some guys doing some nice groupings with a 10x scope at 300 yards, and I have also heard of some guys doing some nice groupings with a Red Dot at 200 yards.

Whats everyones max range with there SKS, if they were Deer hunting (or shooting basketball sized targets), and explain what your set-up is.

I would personally stay under 100 yards for accuracy reasons -- using proper hunting rounds.
 
I have shot mine at base borden up to 300 yds using Czech sulpus at the figure 11 target hitting it 90% of the time. I am sure if I had a scope the grouping would have been better.
 
100 yards open sights, all over the page, but majority hits. Rifle wasn't sighted in at all, didn't bother to adjust the sights at all, was just fooling around with surplus ammo. With a scope or a red-dot you could probably sight it in much better.
 
2x2 gong at 325 yds, iron sights (which have been mildly adjusted for 100 yds) hit about 40% of the shots, others are less than foot off.

Not bad for an old assault rifle, but nothing to write home about. Anything requiring any sort of accuracy should definitely be kept within 100 yds.

Sighting in with a properly mounted scope (not on the receiver cover) will give you an idea of inherent accuracy.
 
Longest range I've done with an SKS is 500 Meters, irons, prone, czech surplus, 6 hits out of 10 shots, on a Figure 12 A target.

For hunting, keep it under 150 meters and you're good to go.
 
Personally, after shooting 5 different SKS', all with factory irons, I haven't run into one that I would trust past 50m on game. I have heard however, that hit percentage directly coincides with the degree of zeal one expresses when calling on allah to guide his bullets...
 
Shot this 5" x 8" group at 200 meters in mid afternoon light with CZ surplus, the white paper clearly visible and contrasted against the berm at POCO.

56 Tula refurb stock condition, rear notch sight at #2 position. This rifle is zeroed at 100 meters, with 6 o'clock hold. Easily does 3-4 inch 5-shot groups when my old eyes have had a good nights sleep.

Iron sights. I can hit a paint can 9/10 at 150 yards, grouping is about 31/2 inches at 100and 8-10 inches at 200. My eyes are a limiting factor. I have been happy with the accuracy so far.

I dont think its the guns, its just you with poor shooting skills!! I have 5 sks's as well and they all can shoot 200 yrds with open sights, targets looking much like the one pictured above. I'm using Norinco SP and Czech surplus. Best I've shot is a 1955 Russian Refurb, worst is Norinco with all mix matched parts but it can still do 200 yrds. With my SKS-D that I hunt with, I've now got a mulie buck, shot at approx. 150 yrds, and a brown bear, approx. 50 yrds. No probs here. I would trust it, with my shooting skills, up to 300 yrds.

A brown bear as in grizzly with an sks?
 
I would'nt trust mine with open sights on a Deer past 150 yards. Mind you, I would'nt pass up on a Deer at 250 yards, but it would more than likely require a few rounds .

I think that with a decent Red Dot on a SKS, there should be no problem hitting targets at 200 yards away with half decent consistency.
