Alberta Regs re:quartering and tagging big game

I've read the regs a few times and I am trying to get this straight.

As far as tagging and quartering big game in the field I'm trying to figure out how to do it correctly without breaking some rule.

According to the regs :

The evidence of ###, species or class that must be retained is as follows:

* moose, elk, deer, antelope, bison and non-trophy sheep - attached to the same part of the animal to which the tag is affixed, one of the following:
o testicles, scrotum, or udder, and in the case of deer only, the completely haired tail, or
o the head with horns or antlers attached if the animal has horns or antlers, or
o the head (complete with the skin on it) if the animal has no horns or antlers, and
* in addition,
o the complete skull plate with horns or antlers intact must be retained with the carcass of the male antelope, male elk or male non-trophy sheep
o the complete head must be retained with the carcass of a calf moose harvested under authority of a Calf Moose Special Licence.

Last year I shot a mule deer in a spot where I could get to it with the truck but it then fell down a coulee and became a whole lot of work to get out alone. I would have liked to quarter or half it, but I was not sure what parts needed to be attached to which.

I'm hoping to get an Elk next year and the area I want to hunt would be hard to get the meat without a quad.

So if quarter the elk and leave the scrotum or udder attached to the quarter with the tag, it seems like I'm ok. So then I get to the truck with a leg with tag attached, I've got 3/4 of an untagged elk in the bush. Or if I'm stopped walking with 1/4 of untagged elk.

What's the deal on this? I'm pretty sure this would be ok, but I'd like some clarification.

Again, I've read the regs but I'm not sure if it's ok.

What do you moose and elk hunters do other than shoot them from the road ? ;)
 
Tag one hindquarter, as always. To THAT hindquarter, leave the scrotum or udder attached.

Quarter rest of animal, transport separately to vehicle, thereafter together. Voilà.

That's what I figured but I was not certain if I interpreted it correctly. I feel better now.

Yup.

The tagged quarter has to match - and the other 3 will match if/when inspected.

Especially if you half-cut the animal instead of doing an actual limbs-off quartering, it would take a CO about 2 minutes to say "yup, good."

I was worried about being accused of taking only the hind 1/4's and leaving the shoulders if I was inspected during removal. Some ass hats do that you know. Usually moose poachers but still.

If the CO complained about you only carrying out a quarter at a time, you could tell him you have a spare pack frame and he is welcome to pitch in and help if he likes.:D
