I bought a used Red Label 20 gauge a few months ago, always wanted one. Great gun, I shoot it well (relatively). Thanksgiving weekend, I was out looking for birds and took a shot at a passing duck. The recoil seemed excessive, and when I broke it open to replace the spent shell, two empties popped out. Weird, but I continued with the hunt. A couple weekends ago, took it out again, but the gun repeatedly fired both barrels with a single trigger squeeze. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I've never torn one apart before, and wouldn't know what to look for if I did.

Funny enough but that happened with my sporting clays version of the Red Label.
The reason why it happened to me was I had my trigger finger in a splint at the time and the gun doubled on recoil.
Try being extra careful with your trigger pull and release and see if that doesnt cure the problem.

I have a 20ga. in an older model with a blued receiver and it's never missed a beat.

I have the original box and instructional manual with mine and I've taken a quick look in the manual but nothing 'stands out' as possibly a problem. Check thier website as they have a couple of customer service contact phone #'s etc. Other than that, take it to a good gunsmith.

That is not a Ruger Red label issue every o/u manufacture has this issue with there doubles from time to time I have seen it in Browning , Winchester Remington and yes $5K-$10k o/unders take it to a qualified smith it could be a sear engagement issue ,or a hammer spring issue or other issues,it is not for the inexperienced to figure out.

You can get the year of any Ruger off their site. Under "Customer Service", then "Instruction manuals and Product history".

Not sure of date of manufacture, it has the stainless receiver. As for contacting Ruger, is there a Canadian repair contact, or just direct to Ruger?

If there's an issue with one of their firearms I'd suggest going to their website and contact them directly and take it from there. If they suggest going through an authorized Canadian repair or dealer outlet, they'll be able to inform you of the closest one based on your postal code.

According to their site, it may be from 1989 or 1990, but here's a quote from the page:

Ruger does not produce firearms in serial number order. There are occasions when blocks of serial numbers have been manufactured out of sequence, sometimes years later. Also, within a model family the same serial number prefix may be used to produce a variety of different models, all in the same block of serial numbers. And in some cases, models may be stored for a length of time before they are shipped.

I never should have gotten rid of my side by side 20. I hate sending things to gunsmiths.

Ruger Warranty

Here is where to send your Ruger in Canada. Rugers are warranted for life. I sent back a P-85 that is about 20 years old a while back that had the front sight snap in half. They replaced it no question. I also sent in a Red Label with ejector issues. Fixed no problem.
Talk to Carole, she will be very helpful.
