I had no idea where to post this, but I was wondering, is there anyone in the Ottawa area who has a farm, or some land where one can legally hunt, that would let me go out with my father and a family friend one or two days, and just let us have a crack at goose hunting?

My family friend has done it, however I have not (and my dad wants to see what its like). He said he'd show me, as long as I could secure a spot to do it at...

Just wondering if anyone would like to help me out? Preferably in the Ottawa South end area (past Greely etc).

I am sure we could work out some exchange of use of land for _______ (goose meat, beer, etc?)

PM me if you would like to help me! :) Young guy looking to get into hunting!

**** Also looking to find a deer spot, but that would be just myself hunting and my dad beside me watching. The place I was going to go hunt in, turns out may not be usable since the owners wife is one of those "OMG no don't shoot deer, they're so furry and cute and I wont have it on my land...but I'll eat the meat from the store because it's not cuddly"... essentialy a hypocrite****

THANK YOU!

I don't mean to be a pessimist, but it might be hard to do this late in the year. I hope you have some luck though. The best bet is to get out knocking on doors and plead your case. If you don't have any luck, do some scouting this fall and find areas with lots of birds, then go around to some farms and offer to work some days in return for hunting privleges next year.

Yea, I figured a) it may be late notice to have someone let me, and b) I think the geese are all gone in my area! haha (or so it seems, except for the ones in parks).

Still, let's hope there's one guy out there who will let me ! I would really like to get out there!

Try pounding on some farmers doors.

I got access to two excellent farms last week - probably 500 acres in total just by asking. Turkeys, deer and geese are huntable on this land and the rut sign is some of the best I've seen in years.

Did you simply drive around, go up to the house, ring the doorbell and ask? I would hate to look like some intrusive guy doing that.

For now, all I really want is some goose farm land (not water, since I have no dogs or boat). I found a spot for deer for this week already via a friend (some nice big bucks in the area, one 8 pointer, and last year's a camera cuahgt a 12 pointer!)

Basically - yes.

Go for a drive, find an area that looks good and can be hunted (no houses, etc.) and find out who owns the land by knocking on doors. Once you find the owner, ask him/her politely. I find it best not to go at supper time, etc.

I've been given access before for geese by just finding the geese and asking if I can hunt the next day.

I know about a dozen farmers and 75% will let anyone in if they asked. The worst thing they will do is say no. Most times they say other guys are already there.

I think it may be a little harder around Ottawa, since most of the fields will be hunted by other guys already.

I need to find the areas with no houses, and just ask away. I really want to go goose hunting! :p

Perhaps - I'm only 30 minutes west of Ottawa so not that far from the city either.

This is how we all get permission..or by maps from the R.M..not sure what they are called in your rural areas?

Now there's an approach I would never have thought of?? Internet scouting! Darned and all these years I have been going out knocking on doors, burning gasoline and securing permission year after year, cultivating friendships with the landowners.....how silly of me , I could have just asked on a hunting forum.

You find 30 mins too far to drive for an chance at goose hunting? Hell, I drive as much as two hours in one direction at times just to scout for a good shoot next morning and I have accesss to tens of thousands of acres to hunt!! Good luck in your pursuit of the "close and easy" hunt.d:h:

As much as asking on an internet forum may seem requiring a sarcastic response, I find that any resource is a good resource. So what if I ask on a forum? By doing so, maybe I will actually meet someone who knows of someone with land, or has land, and I can start my friendship with them that way. Also, it doesn't help that I am young and at the moment DON'T Have my own car, and have to borrow my folks whenever I go hunting, or rely on a pick up.

I get quite upset when people put me down for wanting something a little convinient and more realistic. I don't have some government or well paying job, I am not retired, I can't afford a car, I can't take my parents car and drive to Barry's Bay (even though I would on a weekend since a buddy has a cottage out there), etc etc. There are a lot of reasons I can't just Jump in my car, and drive for 2 hours to ask someone if I can hunt on their land. Its why I am asking on here so I can actually save that gas (and save what little money I have), not waste my time.

Sorry for being young and wanting to get into goose hunting, I didn't realize it was so elitist and pro-oil company. Did BP put you up to that last post?

If I could, I would be like you, waste tons of gas, drive endlessly etc. I can't however, so try to understand that please.

And I never said my hunt was going to be easy. All I said, was I would prefer geographically convinient. As in south of Ottawa, East of Ottawa, etc. Just not almost Toronto. Within a reasonable distance.

Nothing wrong with being young and wanting to get into goose hunting. We have all been there, at least those of us who hunt them avidly. Difference was some of us worked our butts off to provide ourselves with wheels, gas, insurance, licenses, ammo, guns and gear to pursue our passions on weekends and after school. We took the time to introduce ourselves in person to landowners, cultivate friendships with them and help out with chores in an exchange for some fun times on their property, we didnt just go ask on a forum to anyone willing to read if we could hunt their lands. I am very sincere in saying I wish you luck in finding a few spots, I hope it works out for you but I am not holding my breath.

P.S I dont have a high end excutive job either but I am not afraid to "waste" gas and $$ in pursuit of my love of waterfowl hunting. I'll let the folks at BP know to stock up for the future should you acquire wheels and get hooked on waterfowling...:D

As far as goose hunting goose I would say we are officially in the late season. You need some good decoys, good calling and layout blinds this time of year. The birds are wise to casual folks sitting in ditches and fence rows. We hunt East of the city, getting permission around here would be difficult for anyone not from the area. We have I would say 10k acres at our disposal, however only one or two field a week hold birds at a level that makes it worth our while.

This is not the best time to get into goose hunting, wait until early september of next year. I take a few new guys out at the begining of the season. This time of year I only hunt with experienced guys who like me hunt waterfowl ever spare second. Field hunting is great but without some work on your part especially at this time of year you are only going to be marginally effective. When you do get started maybe you will get hooked like me, it get's in your blood.

I was out deer hunting this weekend, and at 8am, I could swear, all I could hear were geese NON-stop, in the Greely area. And gunshots of course. haha

I'm not saying you won't see geese, you will see thousands, but the number you will have a legitimate shot at will be several orders of magnitude less than the number you see.

Without the gear and experience the late season is a bad time to start the waterfowling game.

Agreed. I'm not a super goose hunter but I get out more than a few times a year usually. Late season geese are smarter and harder to hunt. Without experience and the proper gear your not going to have much luck.

Hi Emilio,

I'm also a new hunter (got my PAL in March). I live south of the airport and I have been driving/searching between Greely and Manotick looking for a spot to hunt goose, small game and coyotes. So far, every farmer I've met, they have all given access to their land to someone for the last 3,5, 10 years.

It's very difficult as a new hunter to get access to land. :(
I think most people either know a family member with land or the permission was granted to a family member deades ago and it was passed on to the next generation.

How did you get access to that land near Greely. Crown land?

To my knowledge, the nearest crown land is north of Kemptville but safety is an issue at this time of year.

On a side note, I was invited to join a group of 6 guys for goose hunting two weeks ago off Fallowfield Road near Richmond road. I got my first goose. :dancingbanana:

Let me know if you find a land owner giving permission to new hunters,

I simply asked a family friend who is a hunter, who lives in Greely. He in turn knows someone who has access to land near his house (we literally walk from his backyard, 10 mins, to our stands). So it's sort of a ... I know him, and he takes me because he knows someone who showed him, who in turn is using someone elses land. Long chain :S

But it's fun! I had a buck (or so we think) walk behind me last hunt. I was calling and after some time, heard a big animal behind me. I couldn't turn or else I would have spooked it...but after, when we were heading back, there were fresh scrapes on the trees behind my stand... and his trail cams have caught an 8 and 12 point buck in the area....:S
