I bought a russian SKS about 3 weeks ago and started tinkering (some may call it butchering) right away.

First off I gave it a good thorough cleaning. I love how easily the rifle disassembles.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY dislike the wood stock so while I had it apart I sanded it down and gave it a couple coats of Krylon textured paint. I finished it off with a coat of Plastidip rubberized clearcoat, but that didn't hold up very well so I ended up having to peel it off.

I decided to extend the mag release. I don't know why (seeing as how I haven't even shot the rifle yet) but I just felt like it. So with a little cutting, bending, and TIG welding, this is what I ended up with. I know it's rough looking, but it's only the 2nd time I've fired up my TIG.

I ordered a cheap muzzle brake and slapped that on.

An extended mag release is kinda useless with the box mag, so it only made sense to order some 5/20 tapco mags. Hmmm.... maybe that's why I had to urge to make the extension in the first place. Perhaps subconsciously I knew I would "NEED" detachable mags to justify doing the work.

I would love to order a Tapco stock but funds are tight so that will have to wait. Fortunately, I was given a stainless folding stock for a Ruger Mini 14. So I cut down the wood stock and modified it to accept the mini 14 stock mount. For the amount of work it took I'd recommend just buying an SKS folding stock. But what the heck, it was free and I like to tinker. :)

That's all for now. I'll be taking it out this weekend to finally shoot the darn thing. Next on my to-do list is to make a scope mount that attaches to the receiver so I can put on my spare bushnell. Thanks for looking. :)

Wow just wow, I think you should have taken the rifle to the range with its original parts to see how it shoots and then start making modifications one by one to your own spec/ but hey good work loll , I saw a Bullpop stock for the sks on youtube/you might want to start the project from tonight

lucky you, getting the mini-14 factory folder for free , its worth more than your rifle .

interesting mod. i was gonna do the same with my vz58 underfold on my SKS-D .

Looks good, I like the paint colour.

Maybe a couple of hours with some masking tape and get yourself some digital camo, hehe.

looks good, not a fan of the "stock" wood stock. id keep one as a wall hanger but like the bubbas better

Thanks for the compliments guys! :)

deagle2008> Bullpup stocks look cool, but from what I've read here they're illegal no? I'd totally try to build one if I were allowed.

Curtton> Wow I had no idea the mini 14 folding stock was worth that much!! Good thing I hacked up the wooden stock to accomodate the folder and not the other way around.

Chalk> I doubt I'll put the bayonet back on so the mount will be removed soon.

It's great that these rifles are inexpensive enough that I don't feel bad tinkering with (butchering) them. I was quite nervous when I took a soldering iron to my Glock 17.

I like the wood stock on the Russian SKS but that sucker looks great! Try Interammo for scope mounts. I found one that fits an old Russian nightvision scope I got. Their link is up top somewhere.

Looks absolutely awesome. I've got a receiver cover with a rail if you're intereted it's yours for 50 bucks.. here's a stock picture of it. not to sound like a saleman but you had mentioned you wanted one.

great work!, I did som like that with a m14 stock and AR15 furniture

notice the protype, AKA casualty on the left

ndb86> I'm thinking of making a mount that screws into the receiver instead of the cover style. I'd like to try and keep the scope as low as possible. But thanks for offering :)

no problem. check ok sksman.com i think he has some all you have to do is trill and tap the side of the receiver.

charles.emond> That looks awesome! It sure is fun modifying with parts from other guns. haha Is that 5 minute epoxy putty I see? ;)

it is permatex 5 min cold weld, but is unrelated to this AR15 furniture thing, it was to repair the outside of the stock itself, the grey areas are parts I have sanded down
