I just picked up a Remington 870 Tactical and I would like to fit it with a red dot type scope. I'm considering the Eotech 512 at this point as I like the reticle design (a circle and a dot, not just a dot). Is there another option that would be equal to the quality/durability (from what I've heard Eotech are very good) but on the cheaper side. The Eotech would be about my limit for cost of a scope on a shotty. It will see some outdoor/bush/sh-hits-and-giggle use, but mostly it will keep me warm and cozy at night.

Thanks for any suggestions.

i've heard good things about vortex. If you stumble on a old bushnell holosight they were made by eotech but sold cheaper. Sadly the bushnell's are no longer in production.

Check out the Burris XTS-135, can handle the elements and they are pretty solid for around $350.00

They have a single 2moa dot with 11 intensity settings

I used to have one on my benelli, but I'm using the Eotech XPS now..
The Eotechs are a nice sleek profile and stay tightly mounted when firing high velocity slugs

I think what has been suggested (other then the Eotech) are just a single dot for a reticle, please correct me if I'm wrong. But I am looking for something with more then just a dot.

Has anyone tried the Bushnell scope with the T-dot? I think it's based on the Acog design. It's a little big and heavy, but with the T-dot reticle, and the option for red or green, it seems to have caught my eye. It's also half the price of the Eotech, which I don't mind.

Just wondering if it will hold up the the pounding of a shotgun. I was considering one for a .22, just not sure if it's right for a shotty.

I have a SPARC on my 870. I just recently got it from OneShot, and haven't done too much shooting with it to conduct a proper review.
Just a question though, any particular reason why you want something with a reticule over a dot?
Personally, I think there are a lot of better options out there over the Bushnell Trophy ACOG clone. They're big and bulky, and heavy. Not things I'd appreciate too much on my shotgun.

x2 on vortex. Ive got a strikefire and it is by far worth the money. Its not too bulky and surprisingly lightweight. I just cant justify the huge premium on the real deal Eotechs and Aimpoints, and the cheap clones are just that, good looks and very poor performance. Just the way the airsofters like it! Not my cup of tea, the vortex works very well and seems to be built for some abuse.

i had the bushnell T dot acog on my Vepr12 shotgun for a while, it was fine, but finding a good one can be hard. they had issues with the T being canted to one side of the other

for what you are after, your only cheap options are going to be single red dot.. unless you want to go reallly cheap like a holo sight, but then its basically an airsoft toy and will break after a few rounds..

I've never used any kind of a red dot scope. Just having a single dot seems a little too open. I guess part of my thinking is that with the Eotech or T-dot that there is a little more of a scale to compare the target to. Like if I decide to shoot some clays and I have to lead the target a bit.

But now that I think about, when you use just the front bead on the shotty, all you have is a dot, basically.

I think I have some more thinking to do.:(

Well the thing about using a red dot site is that you don't use it the same way you use a rifle scope. Aim with both eyes open and the dot becomes like a HUD. It's hard to describe, but do a bit of reading about how to shoot with them.

I had an Aimpoint Micro on my 870, but found even that too bulky. I'm currently using a Burris Fastfire and like it. You don't want a busy reticle for a shotgun. I use mine for shooting slugs.

I know Burris markets a variation called the SpeedBead for airborne targets, but I don't think you're going to beat a simple bead or small fibre-optic pipe for clay targets. Any of the red dot sights have too much crap that obscure parts of your field of vision to track fast moving small targets in the air.

While we are on the topic of sights, I was wondering if anyone knew of any low profile laser pointers? With both the price range and profile of most lasers I've seen being quite high, Im thinking of just making my own with one of those store bought things.

I was interested in the NC Star pistol laser, but found out it a huge POS, so no dice there... I can't even find it on thier site any more, but here it is on GP Tactical:

Thanks for any insight.

does crimson trace make a laser site for the pistol grip on shotguns? may be able to modify one to fit if you are creative. Trijicon RMR for a reflex site or the Fastfire ll by burris (waterproof) are not bad alternatives to eotech, for me its aimpoint micro.

bushnell trs-25

I just got one of these delivered and have parked it atop my M4. Cheap, light, sturdy aluminum body, and mounts to the picatiny without rings. I'll find out in time if it holds up under use.

I also own an EO-tech. It serves its purpose for short vs long range on my AR but I'd be reluctant "obviously", to pay that price for a dot sight on a shottie. A 3 or 4 MOA will do ya.

For shotgun shooting, especially if you are shooting moving targets at all, or doing any kind of dynamic shooting, cheek weld matters. So why are you so set on using an Eotech or ACOG clone that totally ruins that?
Use a red dot that mounts as low as possible.
I have had both the Bushnell ACOG look-a-like and the Vortex Strikefire on an AR 15 and I can't recommend any of them. The Bushnell had contact issues, and the T-dot wasn't bright enough in bright sun light. The Vortex wasn't bright enough and the switch sucks. You never really know if the battery is dead, or you set it to NV mode, or if you just didn't press the switch hard enough or enough times...
