To rattle or not to rattle?

So.......... when do you know it's the right time to rattle. Have tried it a few times, with absolutely no luck. There are many scrapes & rubs in my area, but I just cannot seem to get them to come out. Can someone give me some pointers?
Thanks a bunch!

Try softly grunting early morning late evening. A doe bleat (not estrous bleat or a long distress bleat - just a short blaaaah) near rubs and bedding areas in AM might work as well.

Look for food sources. Bucks want to be close to does this time of year. Does are close to food sources... Rubs and scrapes are good, but you want to get to where the deer _are_ rather than where the deer _were_. Patterns often change this time of year. Unless you've patterened a buck at a particular set of rubs/scrapes you may be waiting a long time for him to return if he busy chasing girls.

Thank you! The bucks are definitely tending to their scrapes regularly. I'm sure as soon as I leave the area, they sneak in and hoof out their scrapes...... :(
No rattling though?? Only grunts??

Rattling works, but you need to feel out the bucks. Sometimes gentle sparring sounds work well, but sometime you bring in the smaller spikes that way. Aggressive rattling should be reserved for full rut and only if you're trying to bring in an aggressive buck. You'll want to dope his scrapes with some buck urine and make him think another buck is moving in on his territory.

Often rattling won't work for you if cover is such that the bucks can come in close enough to see there's no bucks... If the bucks are hiding in cover, rattling won't bring them into view unless there's a doe or another buck in sight.

A grunt before and after rattling can often bring a buck in from cover. Never call when an animal is looking at you though - they'll laser you and your cover is blown. So if you've been calling and rattling a bit, leave the calls alone and just rattle non-aggressively. It helps to put your antlers under your legs when sitting so you can rattle them without moving much.

In short, if rattling isn't working, try something else. It's possible you got busted and never knew it. The same trick often won't work twice. Still hunting is an option as well. If I'm having a hard time in an area (IE: not seeing anything) than I'll still hunt BETWEEN the trails near scrapes and try to find a food source. Don't walk down the trails or you'll leave your scent behind - not unusuale to find scrapes abandoned after you do this.

Good Luck!

rattled in a buck sunday night. finished a rattle/grunt/wheeze sequence and the buck cam bolting out into the field. ran across the field and into the opposite tree line. every 10 minutes after that i got aggressize with grunts and a few bleats and he came running to the tree in about 25 minutes. just gotta try different things and experiment.

Thanks!! Shall try some grunting this afternoon & see if anything bites!
I love this site!! It's the next best thing to actually being out in the woods!
Thanks fellas!

I have no luck with anything I do all I ever see is Doe's in my food plot and corn but no big Bucks.....I know my scent and concealment is ok because the Doe's walk by 10yds from me and don't even give me a glance.

I'm hunting a fence row separating Hardwoods from my food plot and corn fields.

There are lots of Doe's had 7 in the food plot but not a single Buck in sight I even used a Boss Buck Decoy and did some soft grunts and rattling. The doe's came out and loved the decoy but again no bucks.

Wish I knew what I was doing wrong any veteran whitetail hunters want to come walk my property and give me some advice?....I really want to harvest a bruiser in memory of my father as its his farm.

There is one track I'll try to post a picture of its so big it looks like a Cow hoof!

Buck to doe ratio is important in rattling....If it is way out of whack it rarely works. I have killed 3 trophy class bucks rattling and called in numerous little ones. The big ones sneak in and the little ones charge in...

That's the truth in my area they lowered the draw % of antler-less tags for some reason I don't know why seems there are way more Doe's then bucks here.....Last bow season I had 15 Doe's in the field and not a single buck havent been drawn for anter-less in 2yrs now.

i am not a veteran hunter by any means (3 years) and i have rattled and grunted in prolly 5-6 bucks. the latest was on sunday. where abouts are you hunting. i hunt property in Frankford.

I'm right on Thomasburg Road half way between Carson and Hwy 37. I have a funny feeling they are holding up in my neighbors hardwoods and only coming to feed well after dark.

Doe's are bedding in our Pine plantation and Cedars bordering a swamp I see them come out every evening and in the mornings I watch them go back in but never any bucks.

Been sitting on some big scrapes with mangled rubs but no bucks to be seen.

I'm going to put my cams back out this weekend to see if I can get a buck patterned for the muzzle-loader hunt at the end of the month.

i would try and find the travel routes with the cams and setup on them instead of the food source. i don't know the land but is there a natural "funnel" on your property. all of my stands are leading into a funnel. they are set up on well travelled routes that they take to and from water/food plots on adjacent properties. i have not had any luck sitting in between fields. last year i had a stand in a treeline seperating a corn and bean field and all i saw were does. a big part of my pre seaso scouting is to find an aerial view of the area. i use google earth and see what is around.

I would post a topo pic but I don't know how to save a google map image so I can edit it with arrows and what not.

I only rattle pre-rut, with a prefect wind (cross wind blowing out to an open field so a buck will have to expose himself to check it out) Usually right at sunrise or set. Very light tickling the horns together grunting at the same time. I've rattled in bucks before, they always circle around trying to get a wiff before showing themselves. I like to only rattle for 20-40 seconds, No longer so the deer can't pin point my location.
