Ian Skennerton has started a research thread looking for assistance from the broader collector community.

Research assistance requested ........ http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=26433

Ian Skennerton said:
I'm looking for indications of combat use of these items, which can vary from bullet holes or even the bullets in stocks, to marks that would indicate shooting of the rifle over a ledge or around the corner of a building. As an example, particularly on Boer War Mausers, I have noticed longitudinal marks consistent with firing over a rock, or around the edge of a boulder, or corner of a building. …. continued ….

As Ian indicated in his thread, his request for members to start a treasure hunt of their collections should apply to collectors of virtually all genres of firearms and accessories, not just be limited to Enfields. It should be an interesting thread to see what turns up ….

If anyone isn't able to post pics or needs help with creating a reply, please send emails to badger@milsurps.com and I'll re-size pics and post them on your behalf.

Regards,
Doug (Badger)

Interesting, although with the age of rifles it can be easy to mistake 60 years of bangs in the hunting season with battle damage.
Such as my gew98b, when I clean it many parts under the wood where covered with dries dirt and a fraction of vegitation. Trench/yugo partizans or carless owner? Hard to tell.

Well, I'll repeat something I said on another board .... :)

I wondered the same thing, but the ones already posted there are pretty obvious and in some cases, pretty grizzly looking, such as Peter Laidler's "SMLE hit by AP round !!"...

I sure wouldn't have wanted to be on the other side of that one ... :p

Anyway, I guess it's a post what you've got and discuss kind of thing, with Ian choosing the no contest type material to ultimately use ...

Doug

In the vehicle gallery at the War Museum is a WWI heavy howitzer - one with the flotation blocks on the wheels. It has numerous marks from fragments.
In the 1960s in London ON, I viewed a Japanese Nambu lmg which had marks from small fragments on the right side of the receiver, and the barrel cooling fins had been grooved longitudinally by a bullet. It was obvious that someone had acquired this gun the hard way.

My RC K98 has extensive stock damage that Ivan has just shellacked over. I'd love to know what made 'em. Looks like miniature tank track gouges, nearly a CM deep.

I remember buying an italian 6.5 carcano from international firearms in montreal in the late 60's that had lots metal pieces embedded in the stock. But, the gun still worked fine.
