What are carry cuts ?

Was reading about 1911s and holsters etc...and came across the term "carry cuts" . Tried to google it to find some pics to see what they look like...but did find anything. I read that Wilson offers them as an option in their pistols ?

What are "carry cuts" ? What is the purpose of having them ?
 
Carry cuts could be referring to the "dehorned" or "melted edges" of a pistol. Its the removal of sharp corners, a smoothing of the slides edges and corners to prevent scraping or poking while carrying.

As for carry cuts and holsters, without a link to the holster in question I couldn't hazard a guess.

Not sure if other 1911 custom houses use the term, but it is normally something that Wilson does to the slide of a gun to make it easier to re-holster (at least that is their intended purpose form what I have read). Basically, it is a narrowing of the muzzle end of the slide, kind of similar to how the muzzle end of a Browning Hi-power's slide looks, if that makes sense. Wilson offers it as standard on the Bill Wilson Carry Pistol and optional on others.

Ahhhhhh OK. I see. Thanks for the photo. That makes sense because I was reading about whether a specific holster would hold any commander size 1911...and the vendor said "depends on whether it has carry cuts or not". So that makes sense now. Thanks !
 
Glad to help! Now if Wilson only made a bobtail version of the Bill Wilson Carry, you'd be all over it! ;) :D

Although I do kind of like Wilson's semi-bobtail rounded butt approach too...
 
The stepped front portion milled into the slide of a 1911 is also known as a "Browning cut" due to its resemblance to the same contour found on the Hi Power. Paul Liebenberg of Pistol Dynamics is known for incorporating this feature into many of the pistols he builds.

I lust for one of his Combat Specials. He builds them to either the original spec of the ones that were built by himself and other gunsmiths at the old Pachmayr shop or his own updated version. Either is available in blue, hard chrome, or two-tone.

All amazing guns that have me trying to mop up the puddle of drool that is collecting on my keyboard! I can only imagine how much one of those would go for these days... Ah well, I can dream...


But wait a minute! What's this??? Is it..? No, it can't be.... Yes, it is... (gasp) an external extractor on a purist custom 1911? Say it ain't so... :D

I always overlooked that extra treatment when checking out Wilson guns. It just blended in for me and went unnoticed.
 
Liebenberg is a proponent of the external extractor, but he will build them with an internal extractor as an option. Normally, I am leery of them in 1911s, because none of the mass production versions has been entirely successfully implemented, but if anybody can make them work, he can.

The Combat Special Evo starts at $3600 and the Classic at $4600.
