I posted this in the reloading section but thought after that it may be beter put here. Anyway I am looking at a 30-06 in a Tikka T3 battue with a 20" barrel, the normal T3 is 22 7/16". I've read lots of stuff about velocity, but there are many different opinions. Is 50fps per inch about right? If so 100fps or so doesn't sound like much of a handycap, what else is there to consider, noise,..? I would also like to take the sights off and scope it, I assume they just screw off not drift. It will be a gift for my dad for Christmas.

Thanks for your input,
Chad

Why would you buy the Battue and remove the sights? That's one of the 'pluses' to those.

I would think you'd be better off buying a T3 and chopping the barrel, no?

Well, that's a good enough reason! :) Tikka's are nice accurate rifles. I love my LH Varmint in .223... some would say they are the most accurate out-of-the-box rifles on the market.

Noise won't be any different to your ears than the 22" barrel. Velocity loss, also not enough to worry about.

You can scope it without taking off the sights.

Hi Chad, just adding my .02 here this evening.
Great Gift for Dad, wished my dad was into guns, so I could surprise him , but I digress.
You mentioned the 100 fps not being a handi-cap and I will tell you this...
"There are guys who will argue till they are blue in the face that the 25-06 will do everything that the .257 Wby will do and then maybe more. All of this will be because they do not like Weatherby Rifle or the Weatherby advertising of years gone by.
Fact is the 25-06 with the same bullet and weight in (factory dress) will be about 100fps slower and thus not as flat as the Weatherby.
I know you are talking about the Battue' and wanting to cut 2 inches off of it,
thus making it a bit shorter and a tad slower in the fps dept.
Should you have the barrel cut and re-crowned I an sure the gunsmith could remove the forward sight and then reattach after the muzzle is re-crowned .
All it takes is a little more money is all.

No no, the battue is a 20" barrel already. I want to cut nothing. Just comparing it to the regular T3 which has a 22 7/16" long barrel.
Hey 6gm6 what cal is your battue?

Rule of Thumb is 30 - 40fps when the muzzle velocity is between 2500 - 3000fps. I know a few guys shooting Rem Pump 760/7600 carbines with 18.5" barrels and they like them.

You could try the new Hornady Superformance Ammo, it is not suppose to give up as much with barrels down to 20".

Good Morning Gringo, guess I was tired when reading/answering your post.
My Bad...but again the analogy on barrel lengths remain.
My opinion on velocity loss remains though, not enough to really matter unless you are looking to get someones knickers in a knot just for fun is all.

Just make sure you keep the sights, cause if turns out to not suit your Dad and he decides to sell it, I'll want the sights with it. ;)

Tikka Battue for $470 and nothing wrong with it?! Really nice find.
