For this weekend ancestry.ca has opened access to their ww1 records for free searching.

They have access records to Canadian, American, and British personnel.

I'm giving it a look-through right now, and thought you all might be interested in doing the same.

I've been a member of Ancestry for a few years. In fact it was through that website that I gleaned enough information to find out about my great-grandfather being in WWI (I had no idea). I've connected with distant cousins and traced some of my family back to the 1500's, through this and other resources.

Having said that, it looks like the current promotion only gives access to soldier's Attestation Papers- information which is always freely available online through the National Archives, whom you also need to contact if you want a soldier's full War Record.

Thank you,
I found my grandfathers records. I never knew the man, and my father died when I was quite young so it's good to find little bits of info here and there.

peace...

Bundesarchiv was in Koblenz, good source for some War Two records.

Also, traditionally, German military archive is in Potsdam.

For Reds and Whites I can offer no help, excepting possibly writing to Ukrainian, Polish, Moldovan, Russian Gummints and asking. Or try with the Lenin Library or the History Department at U of Moskva and ask for suggestions. Who knows, somebody might have something.

One thing. Get started right away. It's really hard to ask questions if the source of the answers has died.

Good luck!
