Hope this is in the right forum, if not I'm sure someone will move it. Yesterday I went to a handgun basics course with Slavex at the Abbotsford Fish and game club. If anyone out there in the Lower Mainland is looking for a new club as I was, check it out. It has to be the best laid out, friendliest club around. This was my third trip out there to shoot and I got a membership, its perfect for me. Anyway, the Slavex course, it was fantastic!!! From "This is a gun, this is your hand" to doing drills on the indoor range, it was a priceless course for me. I have lots of rifle and shotgun time but new to handguns. We tried everything from a Desert Eagle to Glocks, to S&W, CZ, Berettas, We got to handle them all, play with the actions and get familiar with them all. We went for lunch and in the afternoon Slavex took us up to the line and we started to shoot. There was a great cross section of people, myself, a retired old fart, 4 laidies ranging from young Customs border guards to a lady my age,a young teenager starting out and Slavex gently coached us all, safety, safety, safety.I think everyone could learn from something like this and I hope Slavex does another because I had to leave early and missed the last hour or so, I had to go to a live play downtown to "de red-neck" me as my sweetheart likes to say!!!!! Anyway folks, shoot an email to Slavex and see if he will run another, I will certainly go again and make sure I dont leave early. Thanks again Slavex, love those 10 hole groups you shoot, the hole in the target looks like a ragged round from a .40 cal after you put 10 9mm rounds in it!![Or do you shoot one live round and 9 blanks?????]

I was a member of Abby for many years but due to my back and hip pain problems and no longer able to drive to abbotsford from POCO, yes you right, Rob is a cool guy and willing to help new shooter out, ofcourse we have many nice club member there.

Thanks for the kind words guys, and yes there will be another course.
Trigun, you should try and make it out one day just to take a look at all the changes.

Yes I knew the new change there and many positive feedback. I am now on a fix program for my knee and hip, it might take a long time but I be back, right now forty minutes drive will kill me:redface:

I teach weekly already but had a request to do a basics course.
One of my next classes is going to be all standards. From competition ones to LE/Mil ones to stuff like Hackathorn, FAST etc. Full day, one attempt each and that's it. No practice runs, no dry fire. Show up, shoot.

Rob is one of the best handgun teachers In Canada. Whether you are new to handgunning or experienced Rob has something for everyone. Well almost everyone...

Take Care

Bob

You are so right Canuck 44, I was the guy starting the thread and its Rob's ability to teach a whole bunch of folks, there were 12 of us I think. He kept noobs like me happy and folks who were there who carry for their job, we all learned a whole bunch. As I said, my only regret is I missed the part of the course but as soon as Rob does another, I will there.

Wow, one ragged hole with 10 rounds? I really hope Slavex will teach me how to shoot! So how does this work? Do I sign up for the classes or join the Abbotsford shooting range?

10 rounds in one hole....! I love to learn how to do that! For me, 10 rounds ends up everywhere but where I aimed.....:p

Since I live somewhere that take an hour to get Abbotsford, I think I can show up a few times.

They didn't mention distance dude. ;)
We meet fairly regularly on Friday nights and the odd Saturday at Abby (depends on my work schedule) for S&D nights. $15 drop in fee and about 250-300 rounds needed.
Day classes are run when there is enough interest and my schedule and the clubs fit. PM me for more info.

Hi Someuser, not sure if and when Slavex will run another course like that one. I would send him a message expressing your interest and if he gets enough people he will probably run another. I sound like a salesman for him, I'm not, I just think that there are a lot of handgun noobs like me around, I know because I see them at different ranges I have been to. We noobs find it hard to get over that learning curve, safety is a must of course but technique is difficult to learn. So thats why I personally benefitted from the training. Yes, I will do it again too.

banjaboy, I am a newbie with a pistol too. I am so new that I still waiting for my first transfer! I think that I can benefit a lot with a shooting coach. Practicing with myself isn't the same as someone teaching me on how to shoot. I thank you for making me aware of classes in Lower Mainland for pistol shooting. I thought that maybe I got to the states to get some training.

About being safe, I think I got scared enough that I need to be safe. I placed a 9mm cartridge beside my arm once and thought to myself "that's a pretty big hole to be made inside of me!" No holes inside my body, please!:D

I will send a PM to Slavex to express my interest to join one of his shooting lessons.

Hello everyone! I am new to shooting handguns as well and I am looking for some help too to improve my abilities.

What is Slavex's company name that he teaches for? Do they have a website to look at the different courses and costs? Thank you!

Someuser, Vanish, just send Slavex a private message here and as soon as he gets enough interest I'm sure he will do his best to accomodate us all. Dont be scared of your handgun, just be safe and respect it. Slavex will drill safety into you, gently but VERY firmly. I am just like you guys, new to handguns and the basics Slavex teaches will remove the fear and you will enjoy your new hobby, just like me!!! Good luck and hope to see you if he runs another course.

Gamer, I see you are a member of EESA, I am sure Stormy there could give you a good deal of pointers.

Rob was kind enough to let me squad with him on my first IPSC match...I passed and won a plaque. He was kind to me again during the next match in Prince george and I won both matches for unqualified.

I would not have done either if it ws not for Rob helping me with grip and stance with my Glock 22.

Go to skills and drills , Rob knows his stuff and shoots like a man on fire. He is a great teacher and explains stuff so you get it in a fun way. Rob is a great coach...No attitude, lots of humour and you will leave MUCH BETTER than when you arrived.

I made myself a promise to hit this lots when the ski season lets up. My Ol' revolver totin' man is going to come too! Gonna get him a iwb holster and speed loader pouches:cool:

I teach for the club at Abbotsford. I call my "company" Active Shooter (if you know me you get the whole joke). Likely going to go a bit more formal with it in the new year depending on a few things I have in the fire.
