Been out of PPC competition for quite awhile but from what I understand, auto's
are now the way to go. What is the best auto for the open class 1500 and in
what caliber.

I don't think there is an open class auto. If I remember there is a list of guns that can be used, The guns that are approved for PPC are guns that are used for duty carry by law enforcement world wide / or maybe just in north america. It's been about 10+ years since I read the rules. You are very limited to customizing the gun for PPC, some who is active in PPC will chime in soon.

I am very active in the CPCA/PPC world. As been said earlier there is no "OPEN" class in PPC.

You have many 1500 classes now as well as 600 courses.

1500 Duty pistol.
1500 Revolver.
1500 Semi-Auto.
600 Service pistol.
Snub
Distinguished Rev/Semi-auto.

Any service pistol or duty/service pistol matches (600 or 1500) you cannot modify the weapon. It must come from factory with fixed sights, a maximum of 5" barrel and a minimum of 5lbs for trigger pull.
Must also be on the duty pistol CPCA approved list. Pistol must be used in a LE or MIL service. Not sure if it's north America only or not. But I think yes.

Once I was wondering if I could use my HKp30 for the season since it is issued in many services in Europe but it was not on the list. Only the USP was listed. I will check on that and post on this later when I get the info.

Now with the 1500 SEMI-AUTO class ( no open designation for that class as far as I know... )
You can have adjustable sights and a barrel length up to 6". You can modify the factory sights all you want. Minimum trigger pull for semi auto in SEMI-AUTO 1500 is 3 lbs I think. SA/DA.

Most shooters shoot in 9mm for the pistols and .38 for revolvers. At the nationals I did see one guys with a .45 semi-auto ( 59** S&W 5" ) and another with a M&P .40 in duty pistol matches.

If you have more questions feel free to PM me.

Cheers.

Revolvers need to be SA/DA. And a minimum of 3lbs of trigger pull.

Do you have a link to the CPCA approved list for duty pistols? It sounds like something I want to try.

My dad used to use a Smith and Wesson model 52 pistol for PPC. .38 special semi auto, shot flush seated wadcutters. He still says it was the best pistol he ever owned.

What I meant about "open" class was the 1500 course of fire with modified
pistols or revolvers. I used to shoot a 686 with custom barrel, grand master
sight rib etc. I was poking around on the net and was looking at those S+W
PPC 9mm's and was wondering if these are as good as the revolvers and worth the added expense.

My advice is shoot the gun you shoot the most. You will be most efficient with the pistol you are most comfortable with. I shoot STI pistols because:

1.They go bang every time you pull the trigger
2.They need no modifications out of the box to run
3.They have decent sights that are easy to see
4.They have acceptable, smooth triggers
5.They are accurate as heck

I have both an Edge for Standard in IPSC, USPSA and a GP-6 for production and both fit within the above mentioned parameters. In addition, each pistol will keep all their shots easily inside the 10 ring at 50m if I do my part.

PPC9 - 5 inch and 6 inch variants are both proven (here, US NRA NPSC and European
WA1500 circuit) as 50 yard tack drivers. (Ransom rest will print under 2.5 inches at
50 yards). Ditto for the Sig Custom Shops' X5 and X6 setup for PPC.

The Sig 210 (new/old) are also good. So are the Smith 952 (5 and 6 inch) -
which IMHO are essentially single stacked PPC9 without the rear tri-sights.

It comes down to personal preference. Nothing in this range is cheap.

Even custom 1911 - 9mm which advertise out of box < 2.5 inch @ 50 yards
will run similar dollars.

s&w PPC9 seem to be most popular for autos in PPC 1500 match. Very close to revolver accuracy. They are going for around 2500.00 if you can find one. Some matches have Auto 1500 events now. You can be classified in either revolver or auto. Just remember you will be shooting out to 50 yds., so good sights a must. No optics. The S&W Mod 52 is not eligible for Duty and Distingushed matches. Non ajustable sights for duty match. Check out the CPCA (Canadian Police Combat Association) website.

What is with Cpt.Flan?

It appears he got to drinking and edited all his posts?

This list of acceptable pistols would be great to see. I have checked the sites recommended and didn't see it.

I understand there is some changes to holsters as well?

There isn't a per-say list of acceptable pistols for the 1500 semi-auto. Ditto
for the 600 Distinguished pistol.

The S&W 52 and other Colt 1911 - .38 Wadcutter pistols are disallowed on the
basis of ammunition - no full wadcutters in the 600 Distinguished pistol match. Besides,
these pistols have to be hacked to take 6 rounds in their mags. Rules descibing what
is permitted in a 600 Distinguished Pistol are in CPCA rule section 3.4.

There is no ammo restriction for the 1500 Open or 1500 Pistol, so these wad cutter
pistols are ok. See CPCA Rule 3.3 - Any centrefire pistol.

Each CPCA member has 3 separate classifcations now:
Revolver, Pistol, and Duty. You will have to consult the match flyer to see
how the matches are setup. There is a lot of shooting fun if you go to a full
match. 150 Revolver /150 Pistol /150 Duty /60 DP/60 DR/60 snub -
690 rounds, 6 firearms and their associated holsters/mags etc...

Any holster which covers the trigger guard is good to go with traditional PPC.

The CPCA 1500 Duty Pistol match isn't considered traditional PPC. This
style/course of fire is not descibed or shot by the NRA.

There is a list of acceptable firearms for the CPCA 1500 Duty Pistol match.
This match doesn't follow NRA PPC rules. It has its own rules section in the
CPCA rule book - L2 or greater retention holster and two full retention
magazine holders and limited list of "duty" pistols with 5lb DA/Striker
triggers. No SA permitted. 4 magazine are permitted and can be fully
charged (no 6 round limit), if you are LEO using work gear, you get to use
fullly charged hi cap mags.

It seems to be a preference thing - many swear by the S&W PPC9 and others shoot their preference.

I just finished my first season of PPC Duty with a Glock 17.

I bought a Glock 34 to shoot in the 1500 Semi-Auto as I sure can't afford a S&W PPC9 at this point. I also figured the consistency of the guns would help also. The 34 is doing well for me in practice but our first winter match this Sunday will be the test - I'll be shooting for a temporary classification.
