Can my unlicenced brother in law hunt with me?

Hi folks.

I called the Quebec office and they're closed for the day, and their website sucks, so I thought I'd see if anyone here had any insight.

I want to take my brother in law (no PAl, no hunter certificate) with me to hunt grouse on private land.
Is he allowed to use a firearm, as he is permitted to at the range, as he's under my supervision. As well as take game, respecting of course, the bag limit of my licence?

I would check the laws themselves.
If it says nothing on the topic then go ahead.

My experience generally has been that if you do call the natural resource ministry/office they will say no, out of fear of being sued, even if the activity is not prohibited.

Of course there are also the CGN naysayers who will say it is not ok since a brother of a cousin of a friend of a cow-worker was supposedly charged with something.

Hopefully people from Quebec can chime in.
But I would take whatever is said with a grain of salt and check the actual laws on the issue (and the relevant regulations).
 
Apparently that is considered mentoring and only allowed if person is under 18. Also the "hunting" person has to obtain a license and the "mentored" person's quarry considered as part of the licensee's limit. Anyone over the age of 18 MUST have a PAL/POL/RPAL to possess a gun.


The Wildlife Act defines the limitations and that is Federal not Provincial. Test the law and assuredly if you are caught, you will find out if Quebec is exempt for federal law.

Your provincial hunting manual must tell you this statute.

My BIL needs an initation licence. I"ll call the office tomorrow and see what the story is. Hopefully it's as simple as him going to LeBaron and handing over a few bucks.
 
Every province has it's nuances, here in Manitoba no hunting licence is required for grouse if it is a landowner, occupier or immediate family members hunting on private land. I have no idea what it might be in Quebec but I suspect if you need one for yourself likely your brother in law will also need his own hunting licence. As far as firearm use without a PAL, I was always under impression if said person is within immediate supervision of appropriate PALed licence holder you are good to go.
 
In the 2010 hunting guide ..hunting game birds requires a license (Exempt on privately owned land hunted by family) to get a license requires a hunters education course. The statement about being in arm's length pertains to 12-17 year old youth.
 
Its not like the good old days any more, when you just got youre gun and shot some dinner off the back fourty.

Its not the same anymore!.. Times have changed with the "intellectuals " against guns and hunting.
How intelligent that maybe, is a mystery.:)
 
Just got off the phone with the Quebec office. I had to register my BIL for an initiation licence. I then go to the licence dealer (LeBaron or whatever), tell them the reference # and buy a small game licence for him.
He has to be under my direct supervision while hunting, can use a firearm, and has his own bag limit, not sharing in mine.
The initiation licence is a one time deal. Once his permit expires he can't get another under the initiation program, he would have to take the hunter certification course.
