Seeing as it isn't really an accessory, how is the M79 classified? Short barrel and 40mm barrel, makes me think prohib and Controlled goods directorate territory. Anyone care to guess?

They're so low pressure it would probably be viable to make one using shotgun parts. Possibly directly or scaled up as need be. Guess a build here would be a once off model with its own frt, unless it was an exact duplicate of the M79?

I'm just thinking idly of various things that could concievably be legally had in canada for those with sufficient time or money.

there below 500 ft per sec, and really cool to shoot.
According to the RCMP, all the 40mm guns are firearms due to the availability of shotgun cartridges and flechettes for the M79. i.e. >500fps

Just looking at the trigger mech design. Pretty simple with lots of room - only thing I'm having trouble with is the sear and spring on the hammer.... though I've got some ideas.

From what I can tell, a canadian legal M79 could be made if you had a mill, lathe and excessive spare time. Nothing overly complicated about the design at least... might not look identical, but pretty close. M203 would be even easier.

Are 40mm cases available in canada? Only ever seen 37mm.

According to Public Works, owners of an M79 are required to register with the CGD.

Who must register?

Registration under the CGD is required for anyone who examines or possesses controlled goods and/or controlled technology in Canada. Proof of registration is also required for the legal transfer of controlled goods and/or controlled technology. Export permits cannot be issued for controlled goods and/or controlled technology unless the CGD registration is approved.

Whereabouts are you finding reference to the m79? Or is it something to do with it being 40mm? I seem to have a vague memory about over 40mm bore diameters and the CGD.

Do it in a wildcat caliber + rifling?

Yep, pretty much. Go in undersized to what the CGD controls I guess. If you've got the resources to make the gun itself shouldn't be hard to make low pressure cartridged.

Ah well, another one to add to the shelf of "For when I have a full machine shop"
