Need help choosing my shot gun for bear protection and some hunting

Fudd isnt a specific insult, meant to harm. Its just another joke term the same as "tacticool" and the like. Me and my friends throw these terms around and no one loses an eye. Calling a man/woman and his/her choice in firearms down is an insult. Acting like yours is better when his works for him is an insult. Ive packed my Stevens 67E with a 30 in. barrel and slugs in grizz country. How you like that? Ive also got a Benelli Supernova Tactical (who woulda geussed that?) that totals close to $2000 for serious defense. It works and I like it, I'm proficient with it and its as reliable as aids. But I wont call down someone elses choice. To the OP, my recommendation is a test drive. Hit up either a local gun store or range to try out the ones you like. Rem 870's, Mossberg 500/590's are rock solid performers with a huge aftermarket, but different controls that you may or may not like. What is best for you? The one you are most comfortable with, can operate the best and are comfortable shooting. Once you make that decision, you got 2 things left to do. Find what ammo you and the gun prefer, then PRACTICE until you are confident in yourself and the gun. Then you will be as ready as you can be, and more than you need to be. Remember, dont think of it as a need to get it right the first time. If you decide you dont like what you chose, you can upgrade, modify or sell it and try something else. And BTW, the rem 870 tactical has an 18.5" bbl threaded for remchokes. Some even shoot trap with them. Hell I remember watching a Prince Rupert B.C. Rod and Gun Club member shoot trap at 27 yds with a mossberg mariner 18.5" cyl bore...successfully. Not every clay got hit, but a good percentage are in a million pieces! So dont fret over which one is best, like the others wont work. Pick what suits you and have fun with it! because you'll probably never have to use it. Ive had to jump in a truck and arm myself ONCE and I grew up in B.C.

You must learn the ways of The Fudd.

The Fudd is what gives a shotgunner his power. It's an energy field created by all living things.

Don't underestimate the power of the The Fudd.

May The Fudd be with you. :D

CB, Promise me that you will use your power for good:cheers:
Hey! Wait a minute, if it is the energy field created by all living things, how come you use it to kill Donald and Daffy:confused: Hmmm? Now I understand, the power of the Fudd is like a two edged sword. Anyway Don and Daff taste good. Fudd is really deep stuff.;)

If anyone uses a mossberg or a Stevens or a win 1200 or any variant there of better Carry back up gun these all have inherent problems And I certainly would not trust my life with any of them oh I forgot one Noricajunk. Ithaca 37, Browning BPS Win Model 12 Remington Wingmaster no variant there of in a life and death situation these would be the guns to count on most of these can be bought used for $150-$250 saw of the bbl put a set of swivels on it good to go. As far as a field gun goes buy for that purpose. For field shooting you will need something with a 24''-28''bbl

The Stevens is a hunting gun, but if it feeds and fires, it works. Could you please explain the inherent problems with mossberg and winchester shotguns? And what is a Noricajunk? Never heard of it. And can you explain why you "need" a 24-28" barrel when people have used shorter barrels effectively? Not everyone has money for expensive guns and buying one gun for each and every purpose gets extremely pricey, especially if you can make due just fine with 1 gun for all.

All the guns you have mentioned are pump guns. Are they the only guns suitible for protection?
I would prefer a SxS (no not an outlaw). No chance of a "panic pump" failure. And if you need a third shot let's face it you would probably be in the Bears clutches by then anyway.

So the answer as noted in a previous post is a gun with two barrels. A good choice is the Remington 870 Express combo. It has a longer, vent rib barrel with a bead sight and choke tubes for wingshooting and a shorter, rifle sighted barrel for bear defense and assorted other tacticool amusments.

Exactly...............

supernova I have been gunsmithing for a paycheck for 30+yrs and have been a warranty gunsmith for most of the guns mentioned i do know which manufacturers have inherent problems sorry I will not take the time to educate everyone on these forms but I know what i know . also if you want to become proficient as a wing shooter there are basic requirements needed for wingshooting. 30+ yr of trap and skeet shooting low yr, 5000 rounds high yr.12,000 rounds As you can see i was educating my self long before the internet has made experts out of people with no practial background.

This is the ultimate bear cavalry defence weapon...

Understood, but my point is that the guns mentioned work. I know they work from owning a few and friends who own others. I'm taken back when someone tells me that something that has given me no trouble is considered unreliable or problematic by others. I dont claim to be an expert and dont need to be one to help someone along with something I have a little experience with. Ive owned guns from a very young age, so I wouldnt say I have no practical background, though.

get a big giant 8 gauge from the 1800's for them big scary bears that always attack every hunter they see -.-

Edit: id rather have a high powered rifle anyday over a shotgun

I have to agree, I have worked on a number of Norincos and Mossbergs that had problems, and don';t even get me started on the 1200 and 1300 series Winchesters!!
For economy, an 870 Wingmaster pump with a set of two barrels can be had very easily ond on the cheap.
Older wingmasters are excellent shotguns, and one can pick up one with a plain barrel, then get another express barrel with chokes if you wish, or even a modified barrel that will handle steel.
