Here's one suggestion, specifically for whitetail...

Built to your specs, LH, lightweight, 22" fluted barrel, darn good and strong stock, in .260 Win., and well within your budget...and you wouldn't have to wait a year or more.

The PHL is even lighter, under 6 pounds...

The Project Begins

I found a brand new left-handed Remington 700 SPS Varmit chambered in 308.

I picked it up today and by the end of the weekend will have the action removed from the gun. If anyone is interested in the stock or barrel they can pm me. Both are brand new.

If a number of you express interest, I will take photos along the way as this project moves forward. Here is what the gun looks like now. This is a stock Remington picture.

Next choice is to determine whether to keep it as a 308 or consider new calibers. I am leaning towards keeping it as a 308. This will simplify load development and allow me to have an almost matched set of 308 rifles - the other being my Model 7 (RH) in 308.

However, .338 Federal and 7mm08 are both intersting. I have the weekend to think about this as I won't be ordering a barrel until next week.

I actually thought about a lever. Never owned or shot one.

You should check one out then. They're ambidexterous after all.

I hunt with a Savage 99 C lever action .308

The 99 C has a removable 4 round magazine and a tang safety. I have a couple spare mag's I bought from the numrich website for around $50.00 each so I have a quick reload always on hand.

I see 99 C's for sale fairly frequently on here. Eventually I'll buy another to replace the 99 F I now have as backup (it has the builtin 5 round rotary magazine).

If you live in the Edmonton area I'd be happy to take you to the range with me some time and let you shoot it.

I suspect if you try one, you'll find you like it, they're very well made and accurate.

now,..that's way to get it started...I just looked at the same rifle today in 243...I think I'll get one for a lefty project for my wrong handed son....:)

What are you ordering for a stock?

As to the stock, I am facing the same type of restrictions in terms of whether they make the model I want in left hand.

McMillan make a Model 7 replica that is an exact copy of the original factory stock. From the McMIllan website: " It is a classic style stock without a cheekpiece and has a schnabel forend. This stock is designed for the Model 7 but can be used for the Remington 600, 660, 40X and short 700 actions."

The other one I am looking at is a Brown Precision.

I looked at the HS Precision but they don't make a Model 7 style in left hand. They do have other options but it will all boil down to weight.

You should handle a mountain rifle stock if you are going to order from mcmillan. I WAY prefer the slightly longer more slender stock ofthe 700 mountain rifle to the slight stubby feeling model 7.

Sorry to everyone who has seen this pic a million times already.

Short action Stiller Predator
No. 4 Krieger barrel
Robertson Composites stock
Chambered in .260 Remington and assembled by Mick Mcphee.

I wanted something to hunt the fields at dusk and dawn. As such, I wouldn't go below 40mm on the scope. I hunted this year with 2.5-8x36 and found that it was only useful during low light with magnification set to its lowest.

Get your yourself a Blaser 93 can be had left or right bolt and you have a choice of quite a few calibers in one gun.I currently have one in 7mm_08 ,22mag and 30/06 and I
shoot lefty as well

That is an excellent suggestion. I will do that to judge the difference. I plan on having Rob McLennan do the barrel in a Remington mountain rifle contour. So the two things might just marry up nicely.

Is it a production gun or a custom built rig your Blaser 93?

My grandfather and uncles use to chase deer around in NS.

Great looking rifle!

The Blaser is a production rifle - it is a switch-barrel design - so is the Sauer 202. The Sauer 202 can also be had in a take-down version. Epps sells both of them.

I am a Leftie and currently considering upgrading my Ruger 77mk II SS 30-06. Finding a lot of off the rack choices for leftie bolts like Cooper, Sauer, CZ, Browning BLR and my fave, the Savage 99. I have a 250 Savage and a 308 in these rifles and they are accurate enough straight off. Still it would be nice to have at least one fancy rifle or a build.

Great looking rifle!

Thank you.

Since you already have your SPS, I would suggest, for now, simply having the action trued and reusing the factory barrel. A stock would be nice, but these things take time and your build could be done in stages. Mine took the better part of a year to come together.

Or you can call Tim at Corlanes and say, "what can I buy for this many?" Your budget matches the cost of my last rig from them. The Lilja barrel shoots great!

Good luck. Half the fun is in the planning.

What about a doug turnbull I believe is his name makes gorgeous lever guns in some big heavy calibers. A mint case coloured hardend reciever and lever and hammer octagon barrel 18.5" lone full length tube fancy american walnut stock and foreend. You've been hunting a long time and now you want a pet rifle why not go traditional with class. A 45-70 is all you will ever need hornady has new ammo for longish shots and it will push brush a lot beter then those lil pointy fast bullets recommeded. Just my thoughts but it can be your dream
