David Price, 46, said he shot the roughly 875-pound bear with a crossbow after he, his brothers and cousins drove it out of a wooded area.

"We've been after this bear for a few years," Mr. Price said

What's your point here? The guy was after a monster bear that was in the area. Had seen it lots of times. Sounds like it was not so easy to hunt him if it took years of attempts.

Don't be such an elitist.

the reason that bear was killed is because someone decided to fire an arrow at it.

Let me rephrase then....

A wild bear does not get to be 900 lbs by being stupid. Frankly, a wild black bear over 400 lbs is quite large and they aren't commonly shot by hunters despite everyone claiming thier 5ft bear was 400 lbs.:p

A wild bear that size would have been a very old and very wise bear, and definitely aware that humans presented danger to him, and therefore would likely be quite nocturnal and difficult to hunt.

So, the reason that this old bear was in a position to be killed by a hunter was that he was habituated to being fed and the hunters had worked out his patterns and killed him. Had the idiot not habituated the bear, the hunters likely would have never seen such a big old bear during the daylight hours, unless very dedicated or very lucky.

And if the bear hadn't been hand fed, it's likely that Price would have never had an opportunity to get such a old bear.

i think my point is quite obvious at this stage of the discussion. my opinion was asked and i gave it. if that knocks sand into your ###### then i cant help it.

i doubt it was a difficult hunt considering that the bear was tame and overfed.

Its just plain wrong to go feeding wildlife (dangerous wildlife that is) unless you have the damn thing in a cage. Then it can't cause any problems to others when you aren't around. To feed a BLACK bear , and get it that big, and not assume it would be fair game for a hunter eventually is totally naive. He should be grateful during the time he domesticated that bear that it never injured him or any other person, and for the time he had with a wild animal. MANY MANY people go their whole lives without ever seeing a bear. He had 17 years. Anyhow, maybe the bear was his "friend", but it certainly wasn't his personal property, as its against the law to keep and feed wild animals, so his right to be upset is limited to the loss of a friend/pet, but thats about the extent of it.
He has a right to be upset, but really, it was never his to begin with.

Congrats David Price. That's a big friggin bear and after chasing it for a few year he finally got it. What a trophy, and a good tasting one to boot.

And the dope feeding the bear is an idiot and should be charged with feeding wildlife if the wildlife people there had the balls. It's like speeding around here. Nobody gets pulled over if you are going less than 95 in an 80 and so everybody does it. An example has to be set.

I doubt the bear would have ever reached 450lbs without the human intervention. Thats a false weight, since it screams obesity, certainly not a natural weight for a blackie. Therefore, The bear feeder caused this bear to fly ABOVE the radar by making him so big, no hunter could resist.

That's the first compassionate comment I've seen so far.We share this planet with other life forms, and should give a little ground, to those that decide not to kill them.

i agree, sadly my father is one of those who enjoys feeding his deer. to him they are his pets. Its common knowledge that he feeds them year round, the CO's have said zero. I have tried to explain to my father how many deer he will actually be killing when he passes. How many generations of deer that do not learn the proper survival skills. I do have the pleasure of viewing a couple of wonderful bucks.

im quite aware of the scenario that you are presenting.

my comment was aimed at the fact that you were basically taking ALL responsibility for the bear's death and placing it on leroy, when common sense would dictate that the person that physically kills the animal plays a 'significant' role.

i could care less that this bear died. i just knew buddy was a douche and knew it was hand-fed.

a 5 second google search of his name confirmed it with a direct quote.

Sure but you can't fault someone in the area who hunts one of those big fellas. It's no differnt than hunting over bait. You get the animal used to the food source and then lie in wait. It's a valid form of hunting.

There are some elitists on here (ahem) that are acting like those bucks or bears should get some kind of pass when hunting season rolls around.

"Oh don't shoot, it's bozo. Cant shoot that record bear, have to settle for something smaller." Give me a break

Well no schit Capt. obvious...

Being aware of a large animal, where it beds and where it eats are all things that hunters should look for. This bears food source happened to be a moron.:p

try to keep the name calling and thinly veiled swears to a minimum, gatehouse.

there are adults here trying to engage in a conversation. save the toilet talk for the fry station/high school hallway.

What cheap shot? Stop faulting hunters for hunting on a forum about hunting and I'll stop implying you're an elitist with a holier than thou attitude. Or worse, you're just trolling.

We have too many divisive people in the shooting sports as it is.

Bow hunters don't like cross bow shooters. Fudds don't care about IDPA guys. Cowboy action guys don't care if your AR gets banned, etc.

Where does it stop?
It stops when each of us stops thinking he's better than the next sportsman because of his methods and legal choices.

This was not a bear in a pen. It was a wild animal that some guy used to foolishly feed pies. It was killed on a legal hunt. End of story.

Pie fed bear killed in a legal hunt. No issue.
But I think the record should get an asterisk, for being a pie fed bear. LOL
