Got a bit of a hankering for an SKS. Trying to choose between a refurbed Russian or one of Marstar's new Chinese ones. Any comments or reccomendations? I don't know a ton about the SKS, and I'm not a collector, just looking fo a fun shooter that could maybe have some mods attached later.

depends when you want it.

if you want it before christmas goto Reliable or Lever get a Russian refurb for 200$ or an unissued Russian for 300$

if you dont mind waiting a bit. get a marstar brand new chinese with all matching parts.200 with a case and t-shirt.

and don't forget about Reliable's "in-store" only sale on Sat 04Dec. Perhaps some extra discounts to be had if you get there early.

:agree: It is a wonderful time to buy such a fun shooter at bargain prices, and to have so many choices as well.

I only have a russian, and have only fired a chinese once (well multiple strippers but you get the point)

I can remember before this recent shipment of chinese by marstar, there were still some here, but it was generally accepted that the russians were nicer, better shooting rifles capable of more accuracy than the chinese.

Now that everyone has the chinese however because they are here and so cheap, it seems like everyone is starting to say they are about equal.

From my one experience shooting a chinese, i found it fun, but honestly i couldnt hit the paper as well as i could with my russian.

There are two of those chinese living here. They both shoot very well. If you want one now you can PM me and I'll put you through to my dealer who stocks them constantly.

I'd go for the chinese if you're looking for something to shoot too death. It's a shame to take an old Russian and beat it up but the new manufacture chinese are kind of built for it.

If you are looking for a dealer that has both Russian and Chinese SKS rifles, check out weimajack a CGN dealer. He has the best selection and best prices on Russian rifles, Chinese SKS are the going price. No reason to pay some of the inflated prices that are out there............

Nothing wrong with either. However, the Russian rifles have nicer wood, and gererally nicer finishing. They are also the original SKS that all others copied. I'm biased towards Russians. If you go on the US Boards, you will note that Russians, which are much more rare there, fetch quite a higher price.

I'd just flip a coin if I were you. Honestly, I love my Russian and I've never even held a Chinese, but I'm torn as to what I should get when the day comes where I can buy another SKS.

My $200 (plus elbow grease, stain, and Tru-oil) Russian. You almost can't go wrong at the current prices. I'd recommend one of each. In fact, I'd go for two of each, so you can swap parts around and have the option to try refinishing or swapping stocks. It's pretty hard to limit yourself to one SKS!

Nice work!

one of each, get a refurb russian and leave it au naturale, and then a chinese one to deck out however you like.. i don't feel as bad suiting up the chinese sks for some reason.. chrome barrel is a nice touch too..

WoW!
Now Thatz Some Serious :adult:

im likely going to order a russian refurb friday...as soon as i hear that the firearms markings regularions are in effect...buying a few guns if its in effect.

The way i see it its like buying a TT33 cloan (Type 54 i think) for $160 when you can get a real one for $200....so much history behind the real one and dang near the same price.

On TT33s the "real" one I got shoots better than the type 54 a friend has......if its any indication of cloaned sks vs refurb (maybe, maybe not!)

im going refurb "real" sks :b

That looks great. Is that just a ordinary, plain old hardwood stock? I did'nt know that they can look that nice, with some work done to them. I refinished a Laminate stock, but I really like the looks of the hardwood stock much more, now that I have a scene a picture of one properly refinished. The stock that you refinished is nicer that the one that I did. I will start a thread of refinished Red Rifles, I think.

I once think they're roughly the same. However, after I got mine, one Russian and one Chinese SKS, I would prefer the Chinese one, good quality, chrome-lined barrel for sure, heavy and better than other wood stock, and no pain to disassemble and clean.
