I am building a zombie gun for my daughter,it is a russian sks and I am going with the tapco stock with the bayonnette cut.

The question I have is what is the deal with the removeable mags? I see that the 5/30 steel mags are available that replace the stock 10 rd but what is the advantage of a removable mag if you load with stripper clips?

I have a Norinco SKS that is in a butler creek stock and don't really see the need for extra mags.

But maybe I am missing something, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rick

There may be a number of personal preference reasons for wanting several mags, but I find strippers to work very well indeed. They are much quicker than loading mags for certain!

and the magazines will usually require fitting, I have yet to see one that simply drops in.
10 rounds from a stripper is usually quite enough unless you intend to try to shoot down a "Yankee Sky Pirate" they even have drum magazines if you REALLY want to waste ammo.
The tapco stock is a good idea. Now if you are going to shoot milsurp with corrosive priming, just remember that while the bore may be chrome lined, the gas cylinder is NOT! so that will require the hot water treatment as well.

Personally, I have a Zombie'd out SKS myself, with original wood stock, scope and other additions, with the bayonet removed. I would suggest not getting that magazine, and instead working with stripper clips and loose rounds.

An addition I might add here, yes, magazines do not fit well without fitting, and as for that blasted gas tube... arg. I cannot stand the thing! It takes quite a bit to clean it and even so I have noticed rust on it later on. Good thing it's built solid!

The same reason 1 in 10 Honda civics need an aero-kit and spoiler. :p

Seriously, there is no practical advantage. As mentioned above, they usually don't fit w/out some fitting (dremmel) and then that mag only really fits that gun... Strippers are faster, lighter and less bulky. You have to carry the bullets to put in the magazine, and they have to be removed from the stripper... Sounds like working for the government.

You said Zombie gun... When the Zombies attack it's all about speed - more time on target, less time jiggling mags into place. Smooth and quick or you're food.

The removable mags are for looks, and to give people something to whine about when they don't work. No practical reason for them, especially in Canada.

Also, why would you remove the bayo from a "zombie gun"? Makes no sense, if you run out of ammo, you can skewer a couple stenches through the eye before you reload.

Win! :D

For the funny comment. IMHO making ones SKS all plastic like just throws money out the window, but on the plus side it makes the ones left in original condition worth more down the line. :D

I concur. I find strippers much faster than changing Tapco mags with the SKS. I also find stippers much faster than changing mags on my M305.

A little practice with strippers (err...stripper clips) will turn you into a very quick loader. I keep my "empties" and load 5 rounds onto them so I don't have to break the ten with my finger while loading.

maybe , but slapping a mag on is faster then clips (NOT REALLY the case here but ...i like to think it is). All you have to do is pre fill your mags with mag fillers. After a few mags you really get the hang of it. I guess it really comes to the same thing in the end. Just the 5/30 mag looks cooler I.M.H.O.

(source): reloaded lots and lots of mags in the forces :D

+1 also if you own a Russian that ALMOST takes six, you don't have to keep digging that extra round out of the action. Again, fast & smooth.

...not much need for the mag pin if we're nutz deep in Zombies tho hey? Personally I'm skipping the SKS moving right to the skid-steer with the mulching drum.

Hi John, remember we're limited to 5 rounds at a time up North, we only have 1/10th the poulation as you so we can't spare more thn that many victims each attack :bsFlag:

If we get nutz deep in zombies, I'm tossing the 5 round pin and doing my part to stop the invasion with some of these.

The Tapco 20/5's we now carry "drop in."

thanks

I was not sold on the removeable mags as the system works very well as is with an attached mag.

But it never hurts to ask for an opinion from the masses,so she will get the 5/30.

As for the skid steer with the mulcher..............me likey very much!!! and the guy up north has a very good point as well, less population means less targets.

Back when there was no mag limit my brother and I would cut down trees with an sks-d..............good times!

Thanks for all of the help and dont forget to watch The Walking Dead...............I am so sick of the vampire shows!!!

I love strippers too.

I took the bayonet off so I can get the stock with rail front for a vert fore end and store some cr123 in there. Which I can still have a bayonet tho.
