So, this hasn't been a hard project by any means, just a time consuming one waiting on all the bits to arrive at my door.

I started with the idea of building up a B&G shotgun on a Mossberg 500 Persuader, dump a new stock on it, along with a set of ghost ring sights and be set. However, when I came along a Remington 870 Wingmaster for 80 bucks at my favorite local firearms establishment, how could I pass that up.

It started off as a 26" Vent Ribbed fixed modified barrel in plain old Wingmaster furniture. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of it in it's original configuration. A quick trip to the saw and milling machine to abbreviate the barrel a touch [down to 20 3/4"] and a set of friction-fit truglo rifle-type sights were the first thing to get done to it.

First Step

From there it was a search to find what particular stock and forend options I wanted to go with. I got on the wire to ATI and they were kind enough to sell me directly thier el cheapo standard forend, along with a shell carrier and a magazine extension clamp. As soon as it came in the mail, after only a week, the forend went on the iron:

Second Step

They day before, I had decided an an ATI pistol grip, full stock unit. I was contemplating putting an M4 type collapsible on it, but decided against it. A call to Marstar for that and a magazine extension kit was soon made. It got tied up in the shipping department, but I finally got it on Tuesday, and on the piece it went.

Third and Final? Step

So there it is, all piece together in it's matte and glossy black goodness. I figure I didn't do too bad considering I built it for about $100 less than the Mossberg 500 Persuader alone would have cost me. I'm still debating on what I'm going to do for a sling, and I'm still contemplating sidesaddle options. I still may paint all the furniture Olive Drab in order to make it a true Black and Green scattergun.

Suggestions/Comments are welcome!

Looks like the big brother to my 20GA express!

not too shabby! the question mark in "third and final? step" tells me you already know theres more to come :p I like the idea of OD green furniture. If you want to keep it cheap, the tacstar side saddles are pretty good. They got nothing on mesa but they work. Maybe a tac light and side saddle would round it out nicely. BTW, could you show a closeup of the tru-glo rear sight? how well do they work?

That's slick. Any particular reason you built it on the 20 as opposed to a 12?

The question mark is there because I know that with a project like this, I'll never be completely done. There will always be something more to think about doing to it. I've looked at the Tacstar saddles, and that's probably what I end up going with, but I do like the Mesa ones too. I'll try and get a picture of the tru-glo rear sight up tomorrow. I like them. For the $25 I paid for the set, they ain't bad. I Find I get a quick, definite sight picture when I bring the iron up. It was meant as a temporary solution for when I cut the bead off the end of the original length barrel, but so far I'm liking them.

That meat won't know what hit it...

It's a nice shotgun... definitely like the price tag, it's (almost) making me reconsider my Ithaca.

It was only so cheap because I ran into a sweet deal on an 870 to use as a base. It's only 2 3/4" chamber. But for 80 bucks, I can live with that. I just wanted the option to run 3" shells. It's was always likely to only see 2 3/4 though.

Thanks all for the compliments.

Well hey, if you ever decide to "upgrade" to one with a 3" chamber, let me know... I'll gladly take this action and original furniture off your hands.

My Ithaca only runs 2-3/4" shells too, but I think that should be enough for the time being... I don't spend too much time in bear country, so (knock on wood) hopefully I won't need to use it for that. Other than that, it's for fun at the range and home defense... and if I need 3" shells to take down an intruder, I'm screwed either way.

My dad bought me the 20GA youth express when I was 12, then as I got older (and bigger) the LOP on the stock was way to short so I bought the one that's on there now. But everyone was giving me #### for having a synthetic stock and wood pump handle, so I had to change it out
It's a great little deer gun though, nice and light to carry.

Now I just need to pick up a +3 mag extension and I'll have a "real" black SG :D

I'll keep that in mind if I ever find a cheap 3" one. The shop I frequent did have one for $150, but it was gone before i could get a look at it. I ended up with an $80 No1 MkIII with aftermarket aperture sights instead.

I thought about leaving the wood forend on, but the all-black look is just too cool. I assume by the rifle sights it's a rifled slug barrel? With what I've read about modern 20 sabot slug loadings, it's the way to go for shotgun-only WMUs. Are the 20ga magazine tubes smaller in diameter that the 12ga ones, thus necessitating a 20ga magazine tube? I only ask because I've never handled the 20ga version of the 870 and I've never seen 20ga mag extensions.

Forgot for a second to throw in the pictures of the rear sight requested by supernova:

Contrary to what the third picture shows, the dots are actually red, as opposed to orange. I tried to get the front one in, but it's just a basic green dot.

Not bad... I'm looking around to figure out what kind of sights I want on my build as well, but I think I need to stop by a shop and see if they've got any shotguns with ghost rings mounted, or something similar to what you've got, just so I can get a feel.

Yeah, I just happened to walk into a shop and see them, and lucked out because I had a vent rib barrel. For 25 bucks, I figured it would be more accurate than simply sighting down the rib, even if the sights turned out to be crap. Which they were not. The rear sight appears identical to the factory one on my friend's Mossberg 500 24" turkey barrel.

Nice... Have you had a chance to shoot with ghost rings? I'm curious how something like this would compare... I'm still toying with the idea of a red dot reflex sight, but I was going to use ghost rings or something similar as a set of backup sights regardless, so I may as well start with those and then get a red dot in the future, if I still want one.
