What do ya do with youe empty surplus ammo crates?

I use them as planter boxes for flowers and put em on the front lawn in the spring!

Better than painting an old tire! I haven't bought a whole case yet, but when I do, the ammo will probably last me 10 years. I figure as soon as i get it I'm going to put some brass hinges and a hasp on it, and later use it to store powder and such.

Some great ideas here, I would just use it to hold other gun related stuff, currently have cardboard boxes holding junk under the bed, the empty crates don't fit under so they are in storage right now until I move out in spring.

Actually I just had a thought which would be popular for the disaster preparation fella's. Why not make each SKS crate into like a mini supply crate. Some food, water, blanket, ammo, supplies, etc. They can easily be grabbed and carried away.. or am I just getting carried away haha Got this idea when reading a thread about a supply cache. You can bury these secretly around the farm or something.. not too shabby of an idea. Interesting one at the least :)

The tin inserts are very useful also. stack and weld or rivet 4 together plus add some sheet steel inside each 1 and it makes a nice shelf system.

also grind the sharp edges off

Here is what we did my wife painted a pic on it I put on some hinges and a brass pull
This was her first atempt at painting I thought the Elk came out pretty good and now I store my hunting maps in it and hung it on the wall you could cut out the top and put a glass widow in and like curio cabinet

I move mine around the house

If i leave mine which is filled with woodworking tools in one place for too long My spouse starts to complain so i move it from place to place to save the aggravation.

I've had dozens of them kicking around, not all from my own shooting, but because I'm out of town and half way to the range so everyone meets or stops by after for beers and gun cleaning and such.

The little Lady has taken a dozen or so to hold her glass jars for all her garden canning and vegetables. I've used a couple for the back or the 4x4 to hold chains and tools. Another in the box on the quad trailer to keep straps and tie-downs. The most useful one that i regularly use is one painted camo with a hinged rest made out of a small piece of 2x6 for shooting/range box. It holds ammo, brass punches, sight tools, screwdrivers, and doubles as a quick rest on the range. Not as good as a 3 point shooting rest, but not bad for making a steady shot short of a proper rest.

I gave several of them to one of my friends to also store tools and chains in the back of his truck. Good idea... until he was crossing the U.S. the border at Christmas time with a crate which looks pretty much like a box of ammo. Lots of searching, and lots of questions before he got on his way. I think he painted it since.

I store my cleaning supplies in them, gave my son some for storing stuff. Gonna have to stop keeping them though, not much room left. Like the idea of giving them away though.

That is exceptional work. Actually inspires me to come up with something productive with mine. I have a 6' high stack of them that need some attention.
