Would it be possible to put together a Cougar with a 14" barrel?

I guess you would first need a factory manufactured 14" Rem 1100 or would a 11-87 barrel do as well.

Would you be able to re-register it? I assume it would be restricted.

I figure since you cannot extend the mag I may as well look into shortening the barrel.

NO, 18.5" min for a semi auto centerfire, 5 rd magazine max, They are already at the limits!

This is correct unfortunately.

Correct for non-restricted. If a factory barrel was an option, it could be 14 inches and simply restricted.

A tube magazine that won't take the forbidden sixth round of 3 inch ammo, may well be big enough to allow more than five of the shorter ammo.

If we go 14" could we put on a single rnd extension to make it 5 in the tube, and still be legal?

Im assuming they are 4+1 from the factory

The data stamp on the barrel is the default point for the CFC, and the law is that not more than 5 rounds can fit in the magazine. In the case of the tube magazine semi, that would be 5 rounds of the longest shell the barrel is chambered for. As long as you can't get that sixth round of 3 inch ammo into the tube, it's legal.

As for the barrel Length Chris, my guess is that 12.5 would sell, but we know that the 14 inch barrels can be made to function. I'd suspect the 14 inchers would be more popular.

If you imported 14inch and they had the gas ports drilled out larger to the corect size and not just an 18.5" choped down, like the pump gun barrels, then you can sign me up for 25 of them.
There is some crazy cool stuff coming to market for the 1100/1187 in 2011, so i think you will see sales of the 1100 platform going way up.

Of course you know I'd be hoping against hope for a Cougar Mag with the 14 inch barrel and factory ghost rings with choke tubes.......

14 in is the smart thing to do due to the gas ports on the bbl, at 12.5 you would lose to much out off the end of the bbl, and the gas port would have to be so big that the recoil would not be fun at all and you would be looking at beating up the gun and damaging parts.

As nice as that sounds (I have to check my underwear for a wet spot) a semi mag-feed could cause us problems down the road if/when someone gets around to doing high-cap mags for the grizzly-mag. I.E. the drums (hoping) for the grizzly become prohibited because they would work in the semi.

Mag laws do not work that way.
