Finally received this new Winchester M70 Super Grade in the "new for 2010" .338WM chambering. Quite pleased overall, wood is better than pics show. Havent had it to the range yet so can't comment on it's accuracy. I plan to have the barrel cut back from 26" to 24" eventually. The ultra glossy blue finish doesnt appeal to me, maybe a traditional Rust-blue will be in the future if I can convince a buddy. Another thing that has always bothered me with the M70 is that when using Leupold style 2-piece bases, the rear base holes on receiver have the base either hanging way forward over the receiver or if reversed, too far back which affects positioning of shorter scopes even if using a reversable front ring. Anyone know of other makers 2-piece base which fits an M70 better? I suppose redrilling the base or receiver would be an option but there should be an easier way you'd think.

Here are a couple more elegant solutions,

Conetrol (catalog page actually has a pic of the M70)

S&K are very slick,

Leupold dual dovetail or QR rings mount the rear ring in the center like this

but it won;t fit that short Leupold by about a tenth of an inch

If you go Talley steel rings, you will need to get the extended front base (1X) to fit that short Leupold

Nice rifle by the way, though I agree about the gloss blue. They should adopt the matte receiver and semi gloss blue that the pre-64's had, but thats just me.

Pretty basic really. It's a 1947 barreled action. Bill Leeper massaged the action but no truing, cut the barrel at 23" and turned it down til it balanced where it should in the Legend edge stock. With the steel bottom metal and all-up it weighs 7 pounds 7oz. And it's by far the best all-around rifle I have ever owned.

The stock has been painted since these pics. BRNO284 painted it grey with black webbing. He did his usual great work.

Of yeah, that 63 year old factory barrel? It averages about an 1 1/4" for 3 shots. 130 TSX's at 3100 fps. That's at 200 yards, by the way. ;)

that really came together nicely Rick.

for the standard calibers a contour halfway between the FW and std really works
