Not only that, but 6 rounds of .38 sp. revolver as well.

So I was reading some archives and found this old news from 1987 where a boy got killed by a polar bear at the NY zoo.

The police said it took 20 blasts from 12-gauge shotguns firing rifled slugs and six bullets from a .38-caliber revolver to bring down the animals, which stood 8 feet tall and weighed more than 900 pounds

Holy crap, and those were small polar bears as well, only 900lbs? I guess there is no such thing as a polar bear shotgun.
 
Once again we see that chest shots are not stoppers and that NY cops aren't trained to kill big animals. If the boy was already dead, there was little to be gained by killing the bears; its not like they wandered into town a started picking off kids as they can on their home turf. Sad story all way round.
 
So, what does this artical from 1987 have to do with sporting shotguns? You could post this in the "articals" forum. There are lots of cop bashers over there who will jump on board.
 
At the farm where i work, i'm used to take down cows weighting more than 900lbs with a well placed 22LR in the head and a cow can be hard to take down if you dont place the bullet right but i never have anys issues. Ofc, a polar bear its a different story but a head shot is the cure,my 2 cents......

I would think a domesticated cow and a wild polar bear would have slightly different reactions to being close to people;)

I for one would not like to be close enough to a polar bear to shoot it with a shotgun. Especially one that just killed people. I have seen pictures of houses where polar bear frequent that have spikes on the outside walls to stop the bears form trying to get in.
