Looking for a .22 rifle hopefully with a scope to start my 10 year old daughter out shooting.Looking for a less expensive gun because don't know if she will like it.What brand should I get and what will it cost?? thanx:cheers:

I don't know how big your kid is, but when I was little I could pick between a hideous nylon stocked remington with open sights or a very nice ruger with a good scope. I always shot with open sights. The reason was weight. Looking back I'm glad I learned open sights. Wish I was as good with them now as I was back then. On the other hand, lots of people do find scopes easier to learn with. Stick to a 4x max though...
As for rifle, you can find junkers real cheap or spend to the clouds... whatever you do make sure it fits her. An overly long or heavy rifle will never be fun.

marlin 795 would be a great starter gun if you're looking for a semi. I would however reccommend a bolt action for a starter and for that a savage mkII. I own both and they are both wonderful guns. I learned to shoot on an old singlshot cooey (as i'm sure 99% of teh others on this board did) and my dad bought me a marlin singleshot for my 8th birthday. It was a great little gun(still have it).

sorry I'm rambling. I'll sum up. In my opinion of you are teaching a new shooter go with irons and a bolt action.

if cost is a factor don't buy new scoop one up off teh EE i'm sure ANYTHING you get would be great.

most important have fun!

I 2nd the single shot cooey. You should be able to find one with open sights for well under $100.

Edit: If you're in or around Ottawa, I might be able to help you find one too.

LOL, nope, I love rimfire! Since I already committed to this thread, how about a 10/22? That way if she doesn't like it, you can keep if for yourself and fancy it up :)

You can go with, savage cadet, marlin youth, henry compact, ruger 10 22 compact and crickett all for around 200$ and if you go used, yes there's cooey , rem mod five youth ( i have one for my 12 y old girl) with very nice open sights and all of the above. There's a lot of choice and you should not go wrong with any if in good shape. Have fun.
