So I've had this little cute 45 LC Marlin for a while. I haven't shot it much. The kick is non-existing. I used factory 45 LC ammo which is designed for the sixshooters. So I loaded up some by myself with 8 gr of win 231 behind 250 gr cast bullets. I think this thing probably can know down a deer out to 100 m and a bear maybe at 50 m. Any comments?

I had a win 94 in 45 colt for a few years. Its a rifle that I probably never should have sold!!

I loaded 22 Gr. Lil' Gun and a 250Gr Hornady XTP or a 250Gr Bullet Barn cast.

This load killed deer quite well!!

why not they hunt deer in the states with handguns all of the time. you Would be getting more velosity from the rifle than the hand gun

231 is probably not a good rifle powder. A .45 colt will out perfrom a .44 mag anyday. It will definately take down deers, bears etc. but not squirrels, so, I really think you should sell it.

I use H110 for all of my top 45 Colt loads in both my revolvers and rifles I load from 200gr Hornady FTX - 345gr WLNGC's...

FYI a top loaded 45 Colt in a rifle/carbine will out perform a 30-30 on game out to 150 yards the 30-30 begins to out distance the 45 Colt at this range due to the higher BC's of the .308" bullet.

:)

Ok, so I think I will go with H110 or lil' gun. The reason behind using 231 is that I want to use the same powder for both my 6 shooter and the lever gun. I know it's not the best choice. Now I just have to watch out when I feed my 6 shooter.

I got a new 45 colt in a marlin 1894 cowboy .I loaded up slowly a load of H110 under a hornady xtp 250 grain bullet and cci 350 mag primers . with a top load of 26.5 grains it gave me an average of 1752 fps for an energy of 1704 ft lbs. this is an accurate load in my rifle . work up slow . I got some lil' gun that I will try next. like to find some cast performance 265 grain gas checks first . any where in canada sell those?
