Hi all, I am currently using a Remington 710 in .270 and am simply trying to learn as much as I can about different calibers etc. as a sort of prep before I buy a better quality/more permanent hunting rifle in year or two. I like the feel of the Tikka rifles (particularly the stainless with grey laminate stock) and am considering a few different calibers: 6.5x55, .270, 7mm Rem Mag.

A few reasons that I'm considering the 6.5x55 is that it is a proven and successful hunting round in Scandinavia, it is not quite as common in this part of the world, and (I know it seems silly but) I like the idea of matching a Scandinavian round with a Scandinavian rifle.

What are your thoughts on the performance of the 6.5x55 Swedish and perhaps your experiences and pros and cons.

THANKS!

(Aside from the Tikka, I'd really love to get my hands on a Sako 85 Bavarian in either 7mm rem mag, or .300 win mag)

I have one here in a mauser 98 and that is the favorite of my daughter.
She makes clover leafs all day with it.
Nice all around cartridge.
Easy on recoil.
I my opinion and mine only, a tad light for the bigger game animals
at the longer distances.
Yep, my flame suit is on.

Me and a friend on the board here were just out tonight shooting. He brought a Swede Mauser with a 20" 90$ pipe he head spaced and screwed on him self...I laughed at him until he threw 3, 120 grain matchkings into ragged holes for the remainder of the evening, his 300$ 6.5X55 outshot my 1700$ Sako 85 (338 federal) all evening tonight...

It's all been said. Comfortable to fire, extremely accurate, and plenty for moose. BTW the Swiss border patrol is still carrying them.

I have no problem stepping out my door with my 6.5 in hand for anything that roams Ontario. Does'nt shoot as flat as a .270 or 7mm, but that is also reflected in the recoil.
I'm comfortable with mine out to a couple hundred yards. It's a '40s husky, bubba'd, and equiped with williams peep and hooded bead. Great shooter...

You'll never regret getting the 6.5x55, it's good to tip over anything in this country.

+1

On that one!

NAA.

6.5x55 is a great round!

If you want to fire a Scandinavian round through a Scandinavian gun get a husqvarna. Finland isn't part of Scandinavia ;)

The swede is a great round and the Tikka is a great choice.

I have a hunter that shoots really well, all in with a Elite 4200 2.5x10x40 scope in Optilok rings it weighs 7 1/2 pounds and it puts 5 shots into considerably less than an inch off a bench. The rifle is a sweet shooter in the field as well, I dumped my buck this year off hand at 254 yards(I thought it was actually closer at the time).

Here are a couple of pics

Well, I lived in Finland for a year. They are as Scandinavian as they come. Where I lived everyone spoke Swedish and a few spoke both official languages which is Finnish and Swedish.
Finns still use the M-43 round in their assault rifles and 7.62x54R in some of their sniper rifles. Many people hunt with both the 7.62x54 as well as the 6.5x55. Saying Finland is not part of Scandinavia is like saying Canada is not part of North America.

6.5x55 is a great round, and with newer "premium" bullets, I would consider this little round fine for most anything from mice to moose. I picked up a couple of boxes of 120gr TTSX, but I haven't gotten around to shooting anything yet with them. I'm confindent they'll end up being my "go to" bullet after a fine tune a load with them.

I'm not gonna hi-jack the thread , but I'm sorry, it's not a part of Scandinavia.

Nordic countries- Denmark Norway Sweden Finland.

Scandinavia- Denmark Norway Sweden.

Either way tikka and/or sako rifles are awesome, and so are huskys!

Only thing to realize about the 6.5x55 is that you really need to reload to enjoy the qualities of this round. Any factory ammo you are lucky enough to find will be neutered to account for the many older swede mausers out there with weaker actions than say a new rifle like the T3.

The 6.5X55 produces great accuracy, mild recoil and it is an intelligent minimum cartridge choice for all North American game. You should probably handload to get the most out of this one, by the most I mean the most versatility not the most velocity. There is a pretty good selection of 6.5 bullets available now, so it is not difficult to match your bullet to the game.

I would prefer a Sako to a Tikka, but it would be a boring world if we all thought the same way. Just take care not to over scope the rifle, a good quality low power variable scope will solve the vast majority of your shooting problems, and it you find you do need more magnification, mount your scopes in QD rings so you can easily switch between a low power big game scope and a high power varmint/target scope.
