TAC PRO currently manufactures this popular cheek rest:

We have had some requests for a similar cheek rest that can be attached without drilling the stock.

The strap-on (no, not the one you're thinking of) cheek rest will likely have pre-set height positions at .625", 1", 1.25 and 1.5" and retail for approximately $59.95.

Would anyone buy one of these?
What is your opinion on strap-on vs bolt-on?
Has the requirement for drilling the stock prevented you from purchasing a proper cheek rest?

Thanks for your opinion.

If its going on a precision rig, it needs to be solid. it being strap-on would prevent me from buying one.

I like the idea of having those bosses that allow it to go back to the same height after you take it off for cleaning. But, if you really want to make something that guys will like, create one of these with an adjustable stop, so that you can set it to a custom height and return it to that height quickly and easily after removal for cleaning.

+1 and make the stop a separate add on that can be retrofitted to existing Tac Pro's

Also, you're directions made installation of the drill through Tac Pro really easy. One note though, the directions noted that the unit was to be installed a distance behind the furthest extension of the bolt. That should be amended to say a distance behind the bolt to allow it to be removed. I had a little oops with that.:D

I have one coming from Jerry for an HS stock, but am also interested in one for a Savage VLP with a laminated stock. I'm a little hesitant in drilling that stock, so I would probably be interested in the strap on.

I have some with strap and the only drawback is that on a standard stock it tends to slide foward due to the slope of the stock.

You would need a back strap as well, for mine I placed a permanent stop on the stock to stop it to go foward.

Just lower the cheek rest to its lowest position. This will give you plenty of room to remove the bolt.

That's fine for cleaning (have to lower it anyway to get the cleaning rod past), but not so hot if you have to remove the bolt say to show safe, or for bore sighting the old fashioned way.

Was not a big deal for me, I just trimmed the front of the rest to give me enough clearance to remove the bolt. It did not affect anything else.

BTW, I really like my cheek rest. I am very happy with it.

Getting back to the strap on idea, I would think there would be some more interest for milsurp shooters and or hunters.. It would let users add a rest without permanently altering the stock, when adding a scope on a no-gunsmith mount say. I don't personally have an interest right now but that could change as my gun mood swings back to milsurps.

I am guessing there would be a solid "shim" under the rest to hold it at a given height on top of the stock? If they were sold as a kit, with different adjustment shims so users could adjust them it would be very versatile. Having to pick a height at purchase would be less desirable as the chance of getting in wrong would be pretty good.
