Nato rounds

Their is very little 7.62 NATO being brought into the country, and I mean very little as I only know of one dealer who in currently bringing it in. Henry Nierychlo brings in Czech 7.62 NATO for $550 for a 1060 round crate. Its corrosive (Same as the 7.62x39 stuff thats everywhere right now), and non-re loadable buts its reasonably priced and good for plinking. Here is a link to his thread. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=509065 Loaded ammo is towards the bottom.

Their are also a few dealers who have new production .308, SFRC has a few options. MFS steel cased ammo, and 180 grain Privi Partisen, which would be good for a bolt action.

Reloading of honestly your best bet for a reliable source of quality .308.

Don't forget that 7.62 Nato is the same as .308, just as 5.56 Nato is .223. Consult your loading manuals for exact specs.

Loading your own is the ONLY way you are going to be able to come up with decent 7.62x51/.308 Winchester ammo at a price you can afford. Reloading, you can usually shoot a modern universally-available round such as the .308 for a little over half the price of factory stuff... and your own is more accurate if you are at all careful.

For unusual types, handloading is the ONLY sane way to go. An example: I can get 70-year-old 8x51 Lebel ammo for 2 bucks a shot. It is 80% misfires. OR I can load my own for the same price as loading my own 8mm Mauser: about 10% more than loading .308. I can pay $3 a shot for factory Carcano ammo, or I can load my own for 65 cents, EVEN at Canadian prices for components. I can pay $4 a shot for .43 Mauser OR I can reload my brass for 10 to 25 cents a shot. I can BUY Snider ammo for $8 a shot OR I can reload my brass for 35 cents. And it goes on and on.

Which makes more sense?

And there are actually ways to CUT the price for practise ammo. The C.E. Harris UNIVERSAL load for military rifles works well here: 13 grains of Red Dot behind a 180 CAST bullet for 1800 ft per sec and 2 MOA out to 300 yards. Costs 14 cents a shot including the gas-check which isn`t really necessary.

I am getting one of those fake M-14s and will be loading 7.62x51/.308 for it, too. That`s MY answer, anyway.

Thanks for the quotes from AR180shooter. So, it looks like I can shoot .308's in a Nato chambered rifle. This is good news. It is just dumb though that we can't get Nato rounds.

Yes you can. Just don't do it in a small ring Mauser. Some .308 Win is loaded hotter than 7.62 Nato. Can be as high as 56,000psi depending.

I had a similar issue some time ago with using commercial ammo I had on hand in an old 762 rifle. The following letter is what I got back from the manufacturer. Their stuff was good to go and I used it with no issues.

Thanks for using PMC.

With regard to the chamber pressure of PMC 308B, we applies the same standard as the military use 7.62x51mm NATO M80 Ball ammunition.

In accordance with the Mil. spec, the chamber pressure is 50,000psi. Max. but SAAMI standard

is 52,000psi. Max. Since we applies Mil. Spec, the C/P of PMC 308B is not in excess of 50,000psi.

Thanks.

Large ring Mauser is no problem at all as they are a very strong action.

.308 win is a bit hotter than 7.62 Nato while 5.56 is hotter than .223rem (the opposite).
