Rifle Transport Considerations.

Hi Guys,

Picked up a Pelican 1750 case today and was about to cut the foam for my 700. Just a few questions:

Do you transport your rifle without the bolt in?

Do you transport your rifle with the bipod attached?

And cut with electric knife or..??

Any other tips would be great.

i use an electric knife to cut out my foam. looks great every time. care needs to be taken making sharp turns, such as the muzzle end of a barrel.
 
A hot wire cutter works best. Mark the outline with the marker as someone said. All the other ways tend to have not so straight or "jaggedy" cuts. I think Weller, the soldering iron company, make an attachment for their gun that can do this. A particularly steady smooth hand with a box (razor blade) cutter has also been known to produce some fine results.
 
If you're competent with electricity, a hot wire cutter is very cheap and easy to make. Lots of DYI instructions for making one online. You can get most of the parts out of an old microwave. Just re-wind the secondary of the large transformer with 4 AWG cable. Built one in an hour...
 
bolt out..bi-pod on..I am pretty sure I just used an Olfa knife to cut mine..I have an uncle in Edmonton with a plastics company that does foam cutting..last time was in there he was doing one up for a mega 50 cal.

So what concerns are there for transporting with the bolt in/bipod on?

I know some guys insist on taking the bolt out, everytime, others not?

Bolt out is just one more step for me to 100% sure my gun is unloaded..bi-pod..if its not cut in the foam..you will have to carry it in your shooting bag.

My results turned out fairly nice w/ electric knife. the cuts aren't jagged. and use a rule to keep cuts straight. Could use the rule for a wire cutter too, would work well.
 
bolt out. bipod off.

If i leave the bolt in, it comes close to touching the lid on my 1750 because of my tac bolt knob. It wont harm anything to leave it in, but eventually it will wear out/deform the foam due to fully compressing it. I have the room in the case, so i use it.

Bipod off cuz i only have one and it switches from rig to rig. Got a cut out for it in my case. When I need it on the M700 5-R, it goes into the case when i run through my checklist.
