Black bear hunting in Alberta

I asking this here, because the hunting regulations are a little dodgey on this.

I have a resident black bear tag for Alberta. I purchased it this fall and I was wondering if this 2010 fall purchased/unfilled tag, can carry over for the spring season of 2011? :confused:

I'm confused because I cannot find a direct quote in the 2010 hunting regulations. And comparing it to my whitetail deer tags was pointless, as they also state 2010/2011.
My black bear tag has the same date of 2010/2011 on it. But I am unsure if this tag is legit for the spring 2011 season, because of the same dates on my deer tags, that are no longer valid in WMU 501-514.

The answer is yes. Your unfilled fall tag can be used in the spring. I loved hunting bears in Alberta. I always spot/stalked them up North.
 
Sorry, the answer is a resounding NO!
New year, new bear tag. I keep saying it, get yourself a hard copy of the regs and read them.
OP, you're hunting the boreal region, look under Big Game Seasons, Pages 57 & 58, specifically on page 58 under "Black Bear".

Bottom of the page: (6) The spring 2011 season requires a new licence.

That also means a new wildlife cert.

I'm certainly no expert, that's why I always have a copy of the regs with me when hunting. If you're not sure, it's in the regs.

I hope I didn't give you any wrong information. If so, I apologize.

But in my experience (law might have changed since I moved to SK), I went in to get a spring bear - the license seller said my fall tag was OK, but I needed the in year hunting licenses.

And I have the Alberta Regs up on my screen, can Suka and Double Gun clarify this for me - the big game seasons section says for species - bear, type - 2 of them fall 2010 and spring 2011 and there is an 7 note for spring 2011 that reads 7 The spring 2011 season requires a new year licence - I take this to mean your tag for fall 2010 season is still good for spring 2011 but you have to get the 2011 licenses. And why is a spring 2011 bear season listed in the 2010 regulation book?

Because the 2011 REgs don't come out until July when the bear season is already done.

Again just to reinforce -- you must purchase a new tag for 2011 but can use it in the fall season if you don't fill it in the spring.

It says you need a new license because it is a " black bear license" and "wildlife certificate". It is not a " tag".

I have my son's 2007/2008 bear licence in front of me.

It reads:

2007/2008
Resident
Supplimental Black Bear
License
Number: ######x
Expires: 2008 Mar 31
Number of Tags: 1

All his personal info for 10 lines

Issue Date: 2007 Sept 14 14:16:28
Issue Number: ###x
Transaction Number: ######xx

Licence Cost: $14.75
GST: $ 0.89
Total: $ 15.64

The above is right off his old licence. It looks like we bought it in 2007 and it was good for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 seasons. So if his licence was only good for the 2007 season, why did it expire in Mar 31 2008?
 
You might try writing a letter to SRD and getting the real answer, in writing, and if it is incorrect, at least you will have documentary evidence of an offically induced error to use in your defence. AFAIK, "I read it on the web," fails as a defence!
 
I hope I didn't come across as, "I'm right, you're wrong", as that was certainly not my intent.

The reason I stress so much to get a hard copy of the regs and read, read, read them is that the actual regs are only a couple pages, and are common sense. The possibly confusing areas are usually involving seasons, wmu's, etc. Things often change one wmu over, so unless you read, read, and reread, it's possible you could get yourself in trouble that could have been avoided. Don't worry, I"ve been hunting for about 40yrs, and I still have to double check to be sure on a regular basis. For example, it's very possible to hunt on the E side of a cutline or road for a 3pt elk under a general tag, but on the W side it had better be a 6 pt, or you're in trouble. Now, where was that wmu boundry again, is it actually the road, or is it the river that's 1/4 mile E of the road?

All the season info is also in the book, and believe me, unless you spend a lot of time reading, crossreferencing with the draw book, draw results, and your priorities, you're missing the boat. I just love our draw system. Anyone who doesn't wasn't around for the "good ole' days". Our current system is fair to everyone, is the envy of all non resident hunters, and all you have to do is take advantage of it.
If you like hunting it's well worth your time. Between the draws, and general tag opportunities, you can hunt almost everything, every single year!

For 2011 my draw options are: doe antelope, mule buck, wt buck, wt doe, bull elk, bull moose, nt sheep. Add to that general tag options; everthing from trophy sheep to WT buck, upland and migratory birds and it becomes a matter of what will I have time for? We'll likely take advantage of my wife's cow elk tag she can draw next yr for certain, so that could conflict with my moose hunt, so maybe we should go on a spring bear hunt to spot for possible sheep wmu's for fall; after that hunt we could concentrate on the wife's cow tag, maybe leave the moose tag for a year, but then again I'm midway to another trophy antelope tag, wonder if I could fit that nt antelope hunt in between the two; I want to save my bull elk tag for a different wmu with higher priority, but then if son's around I'd like to do the wainright m/l hunt with him. If not, I've been saving my mule buck priority for the possible 2011m/l season here.............the opportunities are endless.

All you have to do is read those harcopies.

You didn't come across "I'm right, you're wrong", I had some mistaken ideas/information. I am glad I learned something. Following the regs correctly is the best way to go.

It sounds like your tag selection for 2011 will be very good. I am hoping to get drawn for mulie buck, antelope, and maybe elk. I just located some wild boars, so I'll be talking to the local CO in a week or so.
