Hi guys, I'm looking for a new semi-auto pistol, so I'd like to put to you all a question.

These are the criteria for evaluation!

- Primary use will be casual plinking at the range with the aim of getting more serious down the road
- Ammo cost isn't an obstacle at this time (I'll be shooting mostly factory loads for a while anyway, and not in huge numbers)
- Relatively uncomplicated to a) take down b) clean c) modify in the long run
- Reliable and not 'finicky'
- Must be usable for IPSC (ie no .22s)
- Things I'm interested in: 1911s (leaning toward colt or SA), CZ 75/85 or Shadows, Glock anything, S&W M&P, Beretta M9 (or 92F, whatever), Browning Hi-power.
- New or used isn't a big issue, as long as condition is VG to VG+

Price range: 650-800, what is the best bang for your buck?

Note: if you have one of the above for sale on EE, now is the chance to shamelessly plug your wares (but don't expect me to not know fair market value :D )

armco tuned sti spartan, often 750$ on the EE ±shipping ±brass

got mine for 750 + shipping, came with 200 45acp cases

My suggestion would be a new Glock 17. New, because it's in your price range and we all like to be the first on the trigger. It's super easy to strip, it's reliable and not finicky, and it's easy to mod. 9mm, because it's affordable.

peace...

Glock for sure. I say a Glock 17 or 19 both 9mm, you will need to hold them in your hands to see what feels good to you. Glock 22 is good as well its .40 cal so you will get the Major rating in IPSC. But starting out for sure 17 or 19.

Beretta 92 is one of the easiest pistols to take down for cleaning, but is fairly large framed. For my money, I would go with a SIG P226, non-rail model. Will fit in your price range. Is easy to take down and in my opinion, one of the safest pistols to use.

Greetings,

I just picked up a IWI Jericho in 9mm. Easy as all get out to take down, and everything I have read about it says it is a great pistol at any price.

And so far, even though I haven't made it to the range yet, I love this pistol. And at around $600 or less brand new with 2 mags, it is a GREAT DEAL!

Matt

I spoke up for the Glock, but I like the Beretta 92 too. Now that the niceties are out of the way, can you please explain the highlighted above.

For the price of handgun and ammo that you will feed it later, Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm.

You can get new one for just over 600 dollars, and it is in many ways an excellent firearm.

G17 yes, G19 not so much for IPSC. Also, there's no major power factor for production division.

CZ75 SP01 Shadow is a much better pistol for IPSC.

what are the differences? at a glance, they look pretty similar. what makes one better than the other?

also, thanks everyone for your feedback...although I'm right back where I've started in terms of making up my mind =P

Not too familiar with IPSC rules, but if they allow modifications, the glock would be dirt cheap to bring up to the shadow standard. If you are a GSSF member, you can aquire a 4th gen glock 17 for 530 plus tax thru police ordnance. add another 15 dollars for a wolf 3.5 trigger connector, 10 bucks for the competition striker and trigger springs, 35 bucks for a front fibreoptic sight, another 20 bucks for a s/s guide rod and3rd to 4th gen adapter, and another 15 bucks for a extended slide release. so for a grand total of roughly 700 dollars with taxes, you have a friggin sweet rig....i have 1, absolutely love it
