Clay shooting

I was pondering a question while on a stand two weeks ago:

Why do some guys figure that shooting a couple boxes of shotgun shells off in an informal clay shoot is a good idea in the deer woods 40 minutes before dark in the middle of the rut?

That is about as irritating as having someone riding around on their quad shooting grouse, just as you have called an elk almost into shooting range.:(

I wounder about the people that are supposedly elk hunting, yet shoot every grouse that they come upon, then wonder why they haven't shot an elk in many years.

It doesnt do a thing.

Case in point. I came into deer camp late and had to verify new ammo in my 270WSM. After shooting a few shots I turned around and saw 2 does and a buck grazing about 200 yards behind me. They didnt care one bit.

Case number 2 - We were shooting Sunday before moose season started. After a round of shooting, I hopped on the quad to go check the target. A bull walked out of the bush, and stopped, half way between the target and me (about 50 yards). He calmly sauntered off into the bush without a care in the world.

In both cases, we harvested animals the following day.

In those two instances, you saw animals that weren't scared away by the shooting. But would you have us believe that no animals will be driven off by the shooting?

The following day,is not today. It could prevent you from harvesting an animal today.

By the way, have you ever hunted elk?A mature bull elk is not nearly as tolerant as moose or most deer.

Three weeks ago I was in my stand, bow in hand. Half hour before sunset the farmers son and his buddies started to target shoot with an assortment of rifles and shotguns a couple hundred yards away, I was vibrating I was so mad. I started making my way down the tree when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, a doe had stepped out of the bush and was grazing the field towards me and the continuous gunfire. I reseated myself only to see a second doe, then a buck, all walking right towards me oblivious to the guns.
I ended up tagging the larger of the does.
I have had better things to listen to while bow hunting, but it had absolutely no affect on the deers behaviour.
It really sucks to be interrupted, but the deer didn't care, the only time they would pause is when the voices got too loud.

So what the OP is saying is that recreational shooters should not enjoy themselves during hunting season? It's OK to do that stuff the other 9 months of the year, just not during hunting season? Maybe the OP should buy his own land and not allow others onto it during the hunting season as opposed to whine and complain about someone using crown land when it doesn't fit use.

Suck it up buttercup, this land is your land, this land is my land, blah blah blah.

Well, if it had been in season, they would have been easily harvestable.

And we have as of yet do not have an elk season in ontario.

I have seen deer not move when a shot was fired, but I have seen more deer run after a shot was fired.Just because you have seen a deer not move at the shot, doesn't mean that shots don't scare any deer off.

X 10^6

We all have to share hunting and fishing spots with others.

The point im trying to make that I listed two moments in recent years (their have been more) where game animals have stood by without a care in the world. At the earliest available time after we saw those animals (the following day), we harvested deer and moose in the same area. But thats beside the point as those animals would have been easily shootable had it been open season at that time.

Im of the opinion that deer and moose arent all that bothered by shooting unless its happening right beside them. And then, they arent going all that far for all that long.

As to the OP, public land is public land. Just remember next time you shoot a gun on crown land you may be "scaring" off someones deer.

Whether or not it bothers the deer is something to discuss. It bothers me while I'm hunting. Just like it does when the farmer whose land I'm hunting decides to run the combine or plough his field. Would I complain? No. But I don't have to like it, either.

Shooting on public land I can deal with. Its people who decide to walk their dogs on PRIVATE land during hunting season, an hour before dark that piss me off. Especially when they park beside your truck, then walk their dogs right past your treestand.

Call the cops and have them charged with trespassing. Call a CO and have them charged with tresspassing,, also have them charged with interrupting a legal hunt.
