I am wondering about cleaning solvents and which products are recomended.

I usually use hoppe's #9. This does a good job on powder fouling but how good is it on copper? What other prodiects work well for both, I am anal about clean rifles and I want some good stuff.

Any imput is greatly apprecitated.

Thanks

I use a product called KNOCkout
by the was that is exactly how it is spelled.
This does carbon and copper foulling.
It's an expansion foan, you shoot it down the barrel, it expands wait for about 20 min. then run clean dry patches and "voila"

Home brew.....Ed's Red bore cleaner
1 pt Dexron ATF
1 pt Kerosene
1 pt mineral spirits (Varsol)
1 pt Acetone
Don't store this in HDPE container and keep it off the wood

This.

And I use 10% ammonia for copper removal - careful though, or your #### could fall off.

Sorry to jump the thread, are you mixing the ammonia right into the Ed's?

No, on it's own. I'll get things cleaned up with the 'Red, then, using a plastic patch loop, I'll get the barrel good and wet with an ammonia-soaked patch. Then I'll push dry ones through until they stop coming out blue. Repeat the Ed's Red, then another ammonia patch, and so on, until I don't get any more blue patches. Then a lube spray (like G96) followed by a dry patch.

In a way, it's good that you're anal about cleaning your rifle, but don't over do it. If you have serious copper fouling, then you need a cleaner with ammonia content. I recommend Barnes CR-10. Don't use a brass brush, go nylon

I find Barnes CR-10 works well. It has a fairly strong ammonia content in a glycol solution. I wrap a patch around a nylon brush, and clean until the patches come out with no blue. My experience with Hoppe's #9 is that it smells great, but does not remove copper. The Benchrest version which I have never used, may contain ammonia and work. Suspect Sweets 7.62 works well too, but have not used it.

I use barnes CR10, backed with Hoppes #9, so that I'm sure that the CR10 is totally out of the bore (ammonia can quite quickly leave ripples on a bore, turning a good shooter into junk). Hoppes #9 will get the copper out if you let it soak for about a week. I know that there are plenty of cheap internet solutions out there, but would you rather pay $20.00 in chemicals, or $600.00 plus in new barrel............I'd rather go with what has been designed to work without wreaking things.

Except that Wipe-out won't ruin your bore if you leave it in overnight and wipe it out in the morning.

Just UBC the bore and stop screwing around with cleaning solvents.

gitrdun,

So, why not a brass brush then? I mean, it is brass and cheap 'brass' brushes can leave copper of their own in the bore, but is one worried about damaging the bore with brass?

The instructions of a bottle of Barnes CR-10 warn against using a brass brush. Something about brass and ammonia not being compatible with each other.

Perfect for those times when you pass out while cleaning your rifle.

P.S. Just don't do that.
