Hello cgn'ers I just bought a 3.5-10 mk4 with illum. Tmr recticle for my MWS but I'm having second thoughts. I really wanted am illuminated recticle, but have doing alot of reading on a FFP being thus this gun would be used for target shooting only what would be better suited. I have no previous exp with FFP, nor know anybody that has one.
Cheers

A FFP makes it possible to use the MilDots for ranging at any power.
Catch is that as magnification is increased, the reticle is magnified along with the image.
I have a FFP scope I use for known distance target shooting. The MilDot ranging feature is of no value to me, nor do I use the MilDots for holding off. I would prefer that the reticle not grow as power is increased.
For my purposes, a comparable scope with a second focal plane reticle without MilDots would be preferable. Very well might change the scope before next season.

I did read of a new model with the reticle on the first plane (ranging and BDC at all power) but the aiming dot on the second plane (not appearing bigger with more magnification). Can't remember if it was S&B or another brand.

As Tiriaq said it depends on your needs.

I believe SFP are the best for low power variable and fixed power. A 1-4X or 1.5-6X will be used at zeroed range on low power and at maximum power for longer shot.
FFP is more useful on a 5-25X where you may need the reticle features at 10 or 20X.

Manufacturing tolerances allow for some erector tube error in V-power scopes with the reticle located in the 2nd FP. Placing the reticle in the FFP, by design, avoids the error. This benefit affects the price of the scope, as you've probably noticed. You won't find the growing size of a quality reticle much of a concern. You'll just get used to it,, no biggie, pardon the pun.

No target shooters I've seen use FFP; 2nd is better for that application. Ranging is a little easier with FFP and a theoretical advantage in reliability with FFP, but haven't seen this with Nightforce in reality.
