I was looking at a very nice Savage No 4 Mk I* recently. The receiver was dated 1942, and the metal was parkerized. I haven't rooted through my junk collection lately, but I seem to recall having one of these with the metal blued. Would it be safe to assume this '42 was refinished/refurbed at some point, or did Savage change the metal finish process around this time?

What colour was the parkerizing? After Savage stopped making them, Long Branch had their fingers on a lot of Savage rifles. It's not uncommon to see them with LB wood and bands on them.

If the parking is green, it might be a 50's LB FTR.

I've seen Savages that kind of looked like grey park...maybe it was what they used new?

The parkerizing was dark grey/black. All the wood was like new, all with Savage markings. I saw no signs of refurb markings, although I realize Long Branch usually didn't mark their FTR rifles. I was wondering if someone "restored" a cut down rifle with some NOS wood and parkerized the metal to look new. I really need to book an appointment with myself to go to my gunroom and look at the Savages I have now, but I'm sure they are all blued.
