Hey Guys,

So I picked up an ATV this season (2006 Honda Rubicon) and am very happy with it...except that riding with a rifle slung through heavy bush really sucks. Anyone here have any wisdom to send my way regarding gun boots?

There seem to be a pile of them onth emarket..Palno, Koplin, Flambeau and Quadrax come to mind. My mantra is "Buy it Once' so I'm happy to fork over some cash for the right one...I just don't want to try seven of them before I find the one I want.

I'd like the case to be 'quick detach' and I like the option of the rear hatch that flips open for fast access.

Any suggestions guys?

Thanks!

I bought one of the "le baron" brand ones 2 years again cuz it was on sale and i was having a very hard time finding one that had enough room for my 50mm obj. scope/ larger bolt knob and was running out of time so i picked it up..
I can honestly say in 2 years of abuse on my atv it was actually a good buy. I really like the way it opens(flips up) and can be locked also.
It just doesnt have alot of padding except near the top but my gun gets sandwiched in so it doesnt move.
Could be a problem if it is free to move around.

Anyways good luck

I have the Koplin model. The soft case inside liner tore the first time i used it. It is made from material identical to cheap landscape fabric.
I have a win70 with a Leup Vx3 42mm and find it hard to stuff in to the hardcase with the liner on. It Just fits width wise.
I lost the retaining pin for the rear cover. Any significant bump without a pin in and the cover falls off. I zip tie it now...
I like being able to pull the hard case out of the bracket quickly. Also being able to adjust the angle of the case is handy.

My advise is to shop around.

Unless you stuff the barrel channel so the barrel bottoms out before the scope, the Kolpin gun boot is great at knocking scopes off zero.I have even seen three scope tubes actually bent after riding over rough terrain in a Kolpin gun boot.

Purchase one with the removable nylon liner.
The pile liner ones work OK if your VERY careful to lift the rear of gun & drag the barrel while pulling it out.
Otherwise the front site hooks it &:HR::runaway:f:P:2:

I use Kolpin gun grips....no boot. They are soft rubber so they don't scratch up the gun, they are flexible enough to absorb some shock when riding rough terrain and its quick and easy to load & unload it from the grips. Just thought I'd throw it out there. PS I also use to carry ice auger in the winter, axe or whatever.

Agreed. Only open sighted guns should go in a gun boot. The constant vibrations and banging will screw up the best scopes permanently, not just knock them off zero.

We have 5 atv's and all use this set up at a cost of $20 or less. Never had a zero problem.

That would only be if you mount the boot on end!
I have 1,000s of hrs of rough ATV'ng with scoped rifles & never had a screw come loose or scope go out of zero, why because my boot is mounted near horizonal on the front rack with the stock right beside the right handlebar. Just enough angle to keep it from sliding out the rear. Actually I have a bungy that I slip over the gun butt when heading to particularly steep terrian.

I have the Koplin IV boot and after 10 years I can honestly say no problems with them. I am on my third one, first one got broken on a rollover, the other two are in use today. So far no problems with the scope on any of my guns.
I do take a bungy cord and tie on the cover so it doesn't get lost and I tie on the clips with twine for the same reason.
I have both the removable sleeve and the pile lined ones. I think I prefer the pile lined because the sleeve is always sliding out when I pull the gun out. The pile is a bit hard to dry if it gets wet.
I do like the easy removal of the boot from the holder.

I've also got a Kolpin boot. I don't remember the model, i think a 6, but it's hinged and has the removable sleeve. I threw a tennis ball in the nose of the boot to take up any shock if there was any. I've had no problems with the scope after bouncing through the coulees and prairie. I mounted mine on the front rack and can easily and quickly pull out the gun while still on the seat.

Our camp uses a great system, its a gun boot from an ATV dealer in Belleville. A suzuki dealer. One of the guys added a polaris sticker on his gun boot. The boot mounts with custom made mounts ( we make our own ) to the front / side of the ATV, the outside of the boot is rigid but the inside is soft and cushioned and the firearm wedges into the inside as you put it in keeping it snug and secure. ( yes it accomodates rifles with scope, and we have never had an issue with scope sights being off )

The boot has a vinyl type cover that slides of the buttstock and velcro's on for transport before and after legal. the whole boot can be removed from the mounts and carried by the handle.

If anyone wants a pic shoot me a pm, I have nowhere to host it or I'd post it here.

Best system I have seen and used by FAR !

Tried a few hard plastic boots and disliked them all.
What a pain to quickly get them out.
I opted for the slingshot open style mounts.
I doubled up and take the 22 or .410 with me also.
Safe Queens don't belong on this set up.
My triggers are all (mostly) tools so if they get wet, muddy or dusty,
they get a bath when I get home.
Need to leave some history on them for the next generation.
My $ worth.
