SVT40 Reloading Question

Hey all,
This winter's project will be cooking up a load for my SVT40. Am just wondering what components have worked for people? Anyone willing to share a secret recipe?

What powders have worked good with this semi auto? How many grains?

What bullets have people liked? Over all length of cartridge? Crimped?

Any and all feedback welcome.
 
Every SVT 40 I have seen eats brass like its candy.

I know that has nothing to do with your post but just wanted to say that!
 
Ya, I already am expecting a short life expectancy of the brass.............but I do have my gas system turned down to bare minimum, to help with that a little.............I just dont know what effect the fluting will have on the brass necks over a length of time..........but I'll find out, and keep everyone posted!

Its not my main shooter, so I dont expect to be going thru piles of brass anyhow...........but a couple times a year would be nice to pull it out, shoot some tight groups, and make some of them fancy schmancy magnum hunter supremes eat their heart out.

So does anyone reload for this rifle? What are they using? Cant wait to hear. Barring answers, I plan to give RE-15 and 4350 a try, and see how the gas system likes those.............but if someone has found the secret answer already, then that would be super! XMR2495 is on my list to try also...........

I am planning on just feeding it 150g............have some .311 150g SST's and will pick up a fmj or a cheap SP of sorts............I have Hornady and Sierra 174g HPBT's............but would like to keep the weight down to be a little easier on the rifle..........so i think 150g would be the ticket........

Thoughts? Opinions? Winning Lottery Numbers? Please share!

Did not reload, but I have pulled out some bullets from surplus brass and they are 180g
 
Most people shot 180 grain bullet in 40. a Canadian BDX works well. PM me for more information on BDX. the two most common powders i know of for 40 is titegroup and Universal clays.

I had a good experience with winchester 150 gr 308 fmj on top of 48gr of h4895 with regular primers. I used ppu brass from Trade ex. I seated billets a bit high of cannelure and roll crimped. Worked fine in my SVT at 1.3 setting. But as mentionned before by other members the ding in the middle of the case is always there. Flutting on the case after firing is not really a problem however cases will need to be trimmed for next reloading:(

If you play a bit with this load you will find a happy medium with your rifle.

LOL.................i was really wondering about the suggestion for pistol powder in an SVT40.................i bet that would give her some snort eh? Think 50 grains would be enough? LOL

Thanks for the other SANE suggestions guys.............I'll be busy at it a little later this winter, just in time for spring. Any other recipes out there? Anyone have any luck with 4350 at all? 2495? RE15?

And Gewehr..........did a .308 bullet actually work decent? How come you never went with a .311 bullet?

Well I only could find fmj's in 308 and they were designed for win308 cartridge. Because my svt does not feed soft point or round nose I had to use 308 bullets. As for accuracy I saw bullets land in the same area on the paper so I was satisfied with the result.:cool:
