I just got my brand new mark III yesterday and today I took out the bolt pin for the first time. I didn't even take out the bolt and now my safety is stuck in the fire position and the bolt will only retract about a 1/4 way. Any suggestions? :bangHead:

Don't worry you just didn't put it back together right. Follow the link in the post above and you will get it right sooner or later. They can be a real pain to put back together.

Thanks for the replies, that page is pretty useful. I've tried at it again but now even when the bolt stop pin is removed, the slide will still only rack back about 1/4 way. Apart from that the slide cannot be manipulated in any way, nor can the safety. I should mention that I have not messed with the gun further than taking out the bolt stop pin.

I live in fear for the day I have to do a field strip with mine. I just clean the barrel and as much as I can without field stripping...and I thought the 1911 was hard!

Been a while since I disassembled mine, but if memory serves, stick a magazine in, aim the gun up, pull the trigger, and remove the bolt from the rear.

Find a Youtube video, or follow the instructions in the user manual to reassemble.

I have a MKII and MKIII. The best way to learn how to strip & reassemble is to practice several times when you have no distractions and can take your time. Read the manual, watch the youtube and do it over and over. You'll be a pro in no time!

+1. If you follow through that link I posted above, you will see that you need to get the hammer back to full #### in order for the bolt to move. You will need to do this with the mainspring housing removed in order to allow the hammer to fall back under its own weight without the spring tension holding it in place.

Just start at the beginiing and work slowly through it and you will get it.
