This all started because I wanted to buy a .22 for plinking and run-n-gun. Good cheap fun for the whole family. Then I found out some of the cool .22 rimfire's were Restricted... WTF? Then I found out some were Prohibited (you have got to be kidding me).
Anyway, I wanted to list the .22 cal "Tactical"* options available in Canada and was looking for everyone's help. This is what I have so far (updated with your input)...
Non-Restricted
- Your ordinary, non-scary. .22 caliber firearm that you can take on a family outing for some fun plinking at your local gravel pit or otherwise safe firing area. Every person of age should take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and promptly go purchase one to these tacticool bad boys. Get out, get some fresh air, and be safe.
Ruger SR-22 Semi Auto Rifle - Non-Restricted
$550.00 at P&D Enterprises
Ruger 10/22 with Tapco Kit - Not-Restricted
(technically not an out of the box Tactical but good value)
$109.00 at Fabsports (Stock Only)
Remington Model 597 VTR Semi-Auto Rifle - Non-Restricted
$439.95 (Black) or $519.95 (Camo) at Frontier Firearms
Mossberg Tactical .22 Semi Auto Rifle - Non-Restricted
$299.95 at Frontier Firearms
Puma (by Pietta) PPS-50 Wildcat - Non-Restricted
$599.00 at Marstar
Squire Bingham (Armscor) M1600/R .22 LR - Non-Restricted
$289.95 at Frontier Firearms
Restricted
- This is a somewhat scary firearm (to Authorities). For whatever reason it has been deemed to be much, much more dangerous than those listed above. It requires a Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) and a permit just to transport. It can only be operated at an appropriate club or range making it's use somewhat annoying and largely un-satisfying - kind of like the feeling you get after watching the Indiana Jones sequels. Don't be fooled by their rugged good looks. They are massively different from their Non-Restricted .22 caliber cousins and you'll need to spend an intense weekend at the CRFSC course handling the comparatively puny .44 magnum handgun (and the likes) just to even begin to think about operating one of these totally destructive Restricted .22 caliber rimfire behemoths.
Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 22 LR - RESTRICTED
$549.95 at Frontier Firearms
Colt M4 Carbine .22 LR - RESTRICTED (a few variations here such as M4 & M16)
$687.99 at Wanstalls
Armi Jager AP-74 - RESTRICTED
Unknown Price
Prohibited
- These are completely and utterly terrifying firearms (to Authorities). You could go blind from just looking at the awesome, awesomeness of their incredibly awesome .22 caliber firepower. If you did manage to acquire one it could be only be used for self defense against Zombies and Aliens. If you are seen in possession of one outside of the triple steel reinforced, laser defended bunker it is normally secured in you could be jumped by the nearest ERT team. One could only guess that the Government considers them a "gateway" firearm and after using one you'll have an unnatural need to go out an buy milspec clothing and and an AR-15 (despite the fact that you are probably already wearing milspec clothing while playing Call of Duty). Caution is advised before looking at or even clicking the link to the manufacture - you could be seen as a radical dissident or just plain "nut-job" and targeted for termination by black helicopters and SUV's. You have been warned.
Sig 522 LR - PROHIBITED
MSRP ~$540.00 USD
Walther G22 - PROHIBITED
MSRP ~$420.00 USD
Armi Jager AP-80 - PROHIBITED
(Support the Legal battle to get this back to Un-Restricted - here is how)
Used ~$250.00 USD
Calico M100 - PROHIBITED
MSRP ~$640.00 USD
GSG-5 - PROHIBITED
MSRP ~$500.00 USD
Undetermined
- These are firearms trapped in firearm limbo where status is yet to be determined or there is just no way it will ever be imported (because it far surpasses the terrifying Prohibited .22 caliber firearm). We can only protest and hope.
Please correct me if I have any of this wrong and add whatever I'm missing.
*Edit: My idea of a "Tactical" .22 cal LR is pretty much any Black/Green/Tan repeating rifle with an interchangeable magazine. It should probably have a pistol grip and it would be a bonus if it had some kind of rail although I'm pretty flexible on the grip and rail. It gets extra "Tactical" points if it has some real world training value with a center fire cousin (i.e. S&W M&P or H&K).
