My next build is going to be a varmint rifle in .22-243 middlestead. I'm debating what kind of optics to put on it but I'm leaning towards something in FFP. If I go with an NXS I'm limited to 3.5-15x50. If I go with a Leupold Mark 4 I'm running MOA adjustment with a mil-rad reticle. The worst part is that these options will cost me nearly double a Vortex Viper in 6-24x50.

So here's my questions about the Vortex Viper:
  • What is the glass like? Could it even be compared to a VX III?!
  • What is the adjustment travel like? Are the clicks sloppy or solid?
  • Will you get the full 65 MOA adjustment out of scope? (By this I mean can you physically adjust it 65 MOA, not will I zero the gun and still have 65 MOA adjustment....)
  • In low light do they perform or is this an obvious budget scope?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have never personally looked through a Viper to be able to compare it to my NXS. It just seems to have the top end options (zero stop, FFP, tactical turrets that aren't covered, moa reticle/adjustment etc.) at a great price.

Yes, we have a few in store. I'd put it up again a Leupold any day.

Very solid.

Haven't tried but from what I've seen from the line, yes.

Haven't had one on any of my firearms yet (run a Razor) but again, from looking through them, and other clients reaction to looking through them, they are a quality scope.

The glass and quality is very good on the Viper. I don't know if I would compare it to a Nightforce though. My Razor I would put up again a Nightforce though, and can't wait to get the Viper PST's in the store.

And yes, I have owned Nightforce scopes. Looked through many S&B, Ziess etc. scopes.

If you are still sceptical, order one from us. We won't charge you upfront.

If you don't think it's a quality scope, send it back COD. If you do like it, let us know and we will then bill you.

The Viper PST scopes are expected to arrive in Canada end of this month or early January. Nobody here actually has one yet so who knows? I do know that the 6.5-20X50 Viper with capped turrets has very solid tactile clicks and an overall feel of quality, and also lives up to the advertised elevation travel.

I am as eager as anyone to put my mitts on the PST FFP, and when I do I'll let you know my thoughts, FWIW.

The version I was looking at is the Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP with the EBR-1 reticle. It looks like a quality scope with the features I'm after, but I'm still skeptical as they are a relatively new company.

It's not something I will purchase within the next month or two, but planning for summer. If a few guys are willing to test them out and drop some reviews I'd be more than happy to read! Do you have the new pricing for the PST line yet Farmboy?

If you don't think it's a quality 'whatever product', send it back COD. If you do like it, let us know and we will then bill you.

And that is one of the many reasons I'm more than happy to give One Shot my business.

I've got a 6.5-20 Viper and I love it, clicks are nice, clear glass I wouldn't say it is a low end scope at all. Nicest scope I own by far! Lifetime warranty that's transferable as well!

The Viper line is wicked glass for the price. Clarity and brightness on par with my VX-3's as 3DMark just said. I'm on my second Viper with no issues and lots of time on the turrets. I don't hunt with my Vortex optics yet, they are just on target rifles but I would bet they are plenty sturdy enough in the field. Sure can't say anything bad about them.

When I get my rifle finished up this summer I'll have to make a phone call to One Shot Tactical by the sounds of it. It sucks not having a designated varmint rifle over the winter, but for the time being I've got a 7STW that will suffice. If I finish the project over summer I'll also have a lot of practice on long range gophers in the prairies!

Thanks for all the input guys. Much appreciated.

I have several pieces of Vortex glass as many of you know. And I too am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Viper PST. The release of the PST was delayed because there was some sort of issue with the scope, some say the turrets had some problems...who knows? But I have a ton of respect for Vortex to not put an inferior product on the market, so I am sure that when the PSTs do hit the stores, they will have all the bugs worked out no question. I will be getting one, probably a 4-16X50 FFP, and mount it on top of a short carbine style tactical/precision rifle. I will certainly let everyone know how it works out once it is mounted and been to the range a few times!:D
