Rem 700 SPS tactical 308 muzzle break

Looking to see if anyone has any idea if there is a clamp on 308 break that will fit the 700 sps tactical. I was just wondering, as it would be a nice addition. Otherwise, if I have to have the barrel threaded, I might as well purchase a match barrel with the threads already done. Looking for a little start up help
 
Stay clear away from the idea of a clamp-on brake. The clearance between the bullet and the brake must be absolutely equal. Not even sure there is such a creature.

You can have a brake added to your existing barrel, but an upgrade with a properly threaded brake is a good idea. Rick at ATRS makes awesome brakes and can do the install. Our Pac-Nor barrels can be ordered with a brake too.

Quite a bit. Certainly worth doing.

There are decent brakes available. Any competent gunsmith can thread the muzzle for the brake. Would likely be a good opportunity to touch up the crown as well.
 
I've seen a couple of guys at the range with 308's using the roedale clamp on style brake. They were very impressed with the brake and indicated no problems with clearance or coming loose. The roedale is about $200 cdn to your door, manufactured and shipped from Germany.

x2 I was surprised to see the change in recoil and more importantly, the real reason I had it done, was a severe reduction in barrel hop on the bipod. I could shoot .308 all day before, now it is like a .223.

I got a defensive edge brake and it had it sent directly to guntech who already had the rifle. I've been very pleased with it, more than I expected actually.
 
You might be better off biting the bullet (so to speak) and have the brake professionally threaded on. It'll be secure and you won't have to worry about it at all after that. Once you have it on, there probably won't be a need to remove it in most cases. I use a Holland brake on my AR and on my .308 to cut the recoil and give myself more time to aim between follow up shots.
 
Brownells used to sell a brake called Que. Basically a BOSS clone that used heat activated glue (I kid you not) to attach to the barrel. They are caliber specific and you have to take fairly accurate measurements of your barrel diameter at a certain spot on the barrel, but they do work. - dan
